<p>De Pere Fire Rescue is a progressive Fire Department located in southern Brown County in northeast Wisconsin. De Pere Fire Rescue provides services to the City of De Pere and adjacent contracted municipalities which include, but is not limited to: fire suppression, fire prevention, fire code enforcement, specialty rescue, and emergency medical services (EMS) at the Advance Life Support (ALS) level. De Pere Fire Rescue responds to approximately 2,500 requests for service per year out of two strategically located stations.</p> <p>The purpose of the POP Firefighter program is to help augment the full-time firefighter staffing of De Pere Fire Rescue.</p> <p>Typical Work Schedule: Shift will be 7:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; Monday through Friday. Must work at least one (1) shift per month.</p> <p>Starting Pay Range: $19.00 - $21.00 per hour depending on certification and licensure. Eligible for Paid On Call duty at $50.00 per month. Opportunities to respond to emergencies when not scheduled. There are no other benefits associated with this position.</p> <p>Residency Requirement: None</p> <p>Applications are accepted on a continuous basis and candidates will be notified when a new recruitment process begins.</p> <p>The following duties are essential for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.</p> <ul> <li>Participate in fire prevention and inspection activities, equipment, and station maintenance, and training dealing with all phases of fire suppression, prevention, inspection, rescue and emergency operation. </li><li>Respond to fire alarms and extinguish fire, calls for Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and render first aid. Perform salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris. Respond to and render assistance in emergency cases. </li><li>Perform rescue operations, removing persons from danger, including injured or unconscious persons, and as qualified, administer emergency medical aid. </li><li>Drive equipment to fires and operate pumps and auxiliary equipment, connect, drag, and carry heavy hoses over all types of terrain, including up ladders, stairs, and through and over debris. Maneuver heavy nozzles and direct fog or water streams. Raise and climb ladders. Carry and operate all fire suppression related equipment, including fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, and lines. </li><li>Clean and inspect equipment and apparatus after returning from a fire scene and notify supervisor of any defects. Make minor repairs to equipment and apparatus. Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks and keep records of such action. </li><li>Ventilate burning buildings by opening windows, doors, skylights, and/or by chopping holes in roofs and floors. </li><li>Keep fire station, equipment and grounds in a clean and orderly condition. </li><li>Participate in training activities and instruction sessions including fire suppression, fire prevention, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and rescue. </li><li>Acquire and retain a thorough knowledge of the City, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items. Perform various public information or education tasks. </li><li>Enter inspection, training, and (on occasion) fire and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) calls into the records management systems. </li><li>Work in a safe manner and report unsafe activity and conditions. Follow City-wide safety policy and practices and adhere to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City's Safety Handbook. </li><li>May respond to emergency calls for specialized service such as hazardous materials, confined spaces rescue, extrication and technical rescues that include high angle, below grade, swift water, trench and collapse rescues. </li><li>May respond to non-emergency calls for infant car seat installations, bee complaints, and fire prevention demos. </li><li>Work with social service related areas of emergency response by assisting victims and relatives of victims of traumatic events. </li><li>Conduct tours of department facilities and teach classes on first aid and CPR. </li><li>Perform inspections of public buildings. </li><li>Perform other duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge of:</p> <ul> <li>Principles and practices of technical rescue operations, emergency medical service, hazardous materials spill and release mitigation, vehicle extrication, and disaster management. </li><li>Principles and practices of fire prevention and suppression. </li><li>Principles and practices of emergency medical, health, and rescue techniques and methods. </li><li>Laws, codes, and ordinances pertaining to fire safety, building construction, electrical installation, and the storage or handling of hazardous materials. </li><li>Care, use, and maintenance of equipment and tools utilized in the performance of department functions. </li><li>The geography of the City, including the street system, hydrant locations and water supply, and the layout and location of public utilities. </li><li>Strategies for all types of fire such as commercial, residential, vehicle, vegetation, and flammable/combustible liquids. </li><li>Emergency response records management systems, communications equipment, fire computer applications, and incident reporting procedures. </li><li>Community fire and safety education programs. </li></ul> <p>Skill in:</p> <ul> <li>The evaluation and implementation of tactical and operational requirements of situations involving large, destructive fires. </li><li>Operating fire apparatus and pumping equipment; hydraulic, electric, and pneumatic rescue/stabilization equipment. </li><li>Operating ladders, hose lines, two-way radios, cameras, atmospheric and chemical sampling equipment. </li><li>Hazardous Materials identification and emergency response protocols, Federal, and State regulations. </li><li>The operation of motorized vehicles under adverse conditions. </li><li>The operation of all apparatus and equipment to effectively perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. </li></ul> <p>Ability to:</p> <ul> <li>Work in extremely stressful situations, day and night, which result from fire and other emergencies. </li><li>Work in extreme conditions, including heights, super-heated and smoke-filled buildings, toxic atmospheres, cramped and difficult to enter spaces, areas of low visibility, and extreme weather conditions, while wearing heavy protective clothing and using heavy equipment. </li><li>Wear and use an N95 respirator and a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). </li><li>Direct and command people in such a manner as to obtain maximum cooperation. </li><li>Understand and obey traffic laws and regulations and statutes governing the operation of emergency vehicles. </li><li>Provide testimony in court proceedings. </li><li>Remain calm in a crisis. </li><li>Think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to and take control of stressful situations. </li><li>Analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective, and reasonable course of action. </li><li>Influence the behavior of others through persuasion and encouragement. Manages conflict or other sensitive issues tactfully and effectively. </li><li>Make accurate and independent decisions. </li><li>Organize, schedule, prioritize and perform duties with limited supervision. </li><li>Observe, follow oral and written instructions, and complete assignments accurately and within deadlines. </li><li>Use appropriate language, style and methods depending on audience and the purpose of communication. </li><li>Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with business representatives, elected officials, department heads, the public, and other City employees with courtesy and tact. </li><li>Develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public. </li><li>Maintain confidentiality and discretion regarding information read or heard. </li><li>Utilize a computer and required software. </li><li>Work the required hours of the position and respond after hours as needed. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent.</p> <p>Minimum Experience: A combination of education and experience may be considered.</p> <p>Minimum Certifications:</p> <ul> <li>Firefighter I Certification </li><li>Current Wisconsin Emergency Medical Technician - Basic Certification or higher </li><li>CPR Certification </li></ul> <p>Other Requirements: Valid unencumbered Wisconsin driver's license and safe driving record.</p> <p>PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:</p> <p>The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position.
