<p>This is routine custodial and housekeeping work in the Akron Public Schools. An employee in this class cleans school buildings on a daily basis; prepare facilities for the next school day for teachers, students and visitors; maintain grounds; perform all applicable custodial duties.</p> <p> </p> <ul> <li>Ensure safety of students </li><li>Assist in air handler and classroom filter changes </li><li>Shovel and remove snow from school grounds and city sidewalks </li><li>Mow school lawns </li><li>Maintain a clean and safe boiler room </li><li>Sweep, vacuum, mop and wax floors </li><li>Empty and clean waste receptacles, trash pails and pencil sharpeners </li><li>Refill soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers and bathroom tissue dispensers throughout the building </li><li>Remove cobwebs, clean windows and chalkboards </li><li>Secure building at night </li><li>Clean and maintain custodial equipment and materials </li><li>Clean and sanitize restrooms </li><li>Promote good safety practices and procedures </li><li>Interact in a positive manner with supervisors, staff, students and parents </li><li>Responsible for the proper cleanliness and upkeep of the facilities </li><li>Organize, direct and participate in custodial and routine maintenance of buildings </li><li>Maintain records and complete reports </li><li>Clean all water coolers (fountains) </li><li>Clean hallway glass displays and showcases </li><li>Clean and sanitize locker rooms </li><li>Clean school lounges </li><li>Ensure all classrooms are properly secured </li><li>Maintain school grounds and landscape </li><li>Make minor repairs to building fixtures and equipment </li><li>Move heavy articles such as desks, tables, file cabinets, etc. </li><li>Perform custodial work in care of buildings and surrounding grounds </li><li>Polish furniture, woodwork, and horizontal surfaces as necessary </li><li>Report damage to building and equipment which require repair to their immediate supervisor </li><li>Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner </li><li>Trim bushes and trees </li><li>Wash walls, mop, scrub and wax floors </li><li>Reports any activity that may be detrimental to the Board of Education </li><li>Complete paperwork as required by supervisor </li><li>Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy </li><li>Establish and maintain effective working relationships with, supervisors, co-workers, subordinates and building occupants </li><li>Perform other duties as assigned by the Head and Assistant Custodian </li><li>Exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces </li><li>Maintain respect at all times for confidential information </li><li>Attend meetings and seminars as required </li><li>Graduation from an accredited High School or G.E.D. </li><li>A minimum of one year paid related experience </li><li>Ability to work effectively with others </li><li>Ability to listen effectively, actively </li><li>Knowledge of appropriate safety procedures </li><li>Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings and labels </li><li>Knowledge of the proper care and storage of chemicals </li><li>Knowledge of the care of materials, methods and practices essential to proper cleaning of a facility </li><li>Knowledge of the care of sweepers, vacuum machines, mops, brushes, cleaning fluids and other cleaning materials and equipment </li><li>Ability to work independently </li><li>Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing </li><li>Ability to problem solve </li><li>Ability to learn proper use of materials, methods and practices used in cleaning operations </li><li>Knowledge of how to clean up and disposal of blood borne pathogens </li><li>Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces </li></ul> <p>This is a classified position. </p> <p>The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience.
