This position requires exercising independent judgement and a basic conceptual understanding of the applicable science. The successful candidate will play a critical role in launching exciting new investigations into Toxoplasma's sexual cycle and gain experience with a wide range of techniques, including fixed and live-cell microscopy, functional genomics, and parasite/mammalian cell culture. As an early hire in a new lab, the candidate will also have the unique opportunity to help shape laboratory culture and practices, working closely with the PI to outfit and organize new BSL1 and BSL2 research spaces, manage host cell stocks, and aid in in the recruitment and training of new lab members. Get in on the ground floor to help build a collaborative and energetic research environment!</p> <p>Specific responsibilities:</p> <p>Mammalian cell culture:</p> <ul> <li>Perform aseptic cell culture techniques to manage common-use mammalian host cell stocks; includes media preparation, passaging, and cryopreservation/thawing. </li><li>Maintain detailed and accurate records of the laboratory's host cell line inventory. </li><li>Contribute to the documentation and optimization of cell culture protocols. </li></ul> <p>Laboratory operations and maintenance:</p> <ul> <li>Order and manage common research supplies (i.e. gloves, gasses, plastics). </li><li>Ensure the proper functioning of large laboratory equipment, including widefield epifluorescence and inverted routine microscopes, centrifuges, tissue culture incubators, cryogenic storage tanks, and freezers. </li><li>Aid PI in onboarding new trainees/employees. </li><li>Oversee general housekeeping and lab upkeep, including management of hazardous waste removal. </li><li>Develop, implement, and enforce safe laboratory procedures. </li></ul> <p>Experimentation and data analysis:</p> <ul> <li>Aid in ongoing molecular-genetic studies on Toxoplasma differentiation and gene regulation, primarily through genetic manipulation, culture, characterization, and documentation of parasite strains. </li><li>Accurately record experimental protocols and data in laboratory notebooks and electronic databases. </li><li>Asist with basic data organization and analysis. </li><li>Prepare presentation slides and present data in group meetings. </li></ul> <p>Requires at least 1 year of related experience.</p> <p>This is an Intermediate Level position in the Support track.</p> <p>Job Code: S56442</p> <p>Grade: S14</p> <p>Expected Pay Range: $10.92 to $25.06</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <p>EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).</p> <p>Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:</p> <p>Research Technician, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.</p> <p>Preferences</p> <p>Preference will be given to applicants with prior laboratory research experience, particularly in aseptic technique/mammalian cell culture.
