<p>PRIMARY FUNCTION: This position is responsible for teaching outdoor science and environmental education programs to encourage students' awareness and appreciation of the environment and to broaden their knowledge of science concepts.</p> <p>REPORTS TO: Director</p> <p>SALARY SCHEDULE: Teacher</p> <p>WORK DAYS: 190</p> <p>REQUIREMENTS:</p> <ul> <li>Education Level: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with an empahsis in science or agriculture science. Preferred: Bachelor's degree with major or minor in science; preferably environmental science or biology. Teaching science in an informal education setting and Boating experience and/or Captain's License. </li><li>Experience, Skill and Certification: Valid Georgia Teaching Certificate in the assigned teaching field MG Science, Science 6-12 or Biology. </li></ul> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Teaches skills, knowledge, and scientific attitudes through courses in general science, earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, physiology, or science problems to pupils of all ages, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.</p> </li><li> <p>Instructs students in science and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.</p> </li><li> <p>Plans a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and student experiments; organizes laboratory activities for optimum learning.</p> </li><li> <p>Demonstrates scientific concepts by use of scientific apparatus, experiments, and standard or teacher-prepared charts, sketches, and other instructional aids.</p> </li><li> <p>Evaluates each student's growth in knowledge, skills, and scientific attitudes in course being taught.</p> </li><li> <p>Selects and requests books, instructional aids, science equipment, chemicals, and supplies, and maintains inventory records as required.</p> </li><li> <p>Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities.</p> </li><li> <p>At this facility, the Science Teacher also:</p> </li><li> <p>Conducts outdoor educational programs (in all weather conditions) for school children and adults on various science topics including the subjects of wetlands (salt and fresh water environments), natural history, animal behaviors and characteristics, environmental education awareness and issues.</p> </li><li> <p>Walks 1-2 miles per day on uneven natural surface.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists with maintenance of trails, grounds, gardens, etc.</p> </li><li> <p>Teaches skills, knowledge, and scientific attitudes through courses in general science, earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, physiology, or science problems to pupils of all ages, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.</p> </li><li> <p>Instructs students in science and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.</p> </li><li> <p>Plans a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and student experiments; organizes laboratory activities for optimum learning.</p> </li><li> <p>Demonstrates scientific concepts by use of scientific apparatus, experiments, and standard or teacher-prepared charts, sketches, and other instructional aids.</p> </li><li> <p>Evaluates each student's growth in knowledge, skills, and scientific attitudes in course being taught.</p> </li><li> <p>Selects and requests books, instructional aids, science equipment, chemicals, and supplies, and maintains inventory records as required.</p> </li><li> <p>Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities.</p> </li><li> <p>At this facility, the Science Teacher also:</p> </li><li> <p>Conducts outdoor educational programs (in all weather conditions) for school children and adults on various science topics including the subjects of wetlands (salt and fresh water environments), natural history, animal behaviors and characteristics, environmental education awareness and issues.</p> </li><li> <p>Walks 1-2 miles per day on uneven natural surface.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists with maintenance of trails, grounds, gardens, etc.</p> </li><li> <p>Works extensively with the public.</p> </li><li> <p>Conducts off-site educational programs at schools, libraries, nursing homes, etc.</p> </li><li> <p>Regularly handles animals for public programs that include but not limited to snakes, turtles, baby alligators, armadillos, opossums, birds of prey, etc.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists with the responsibility of animal care to include feeding, scooping, traveling, shifting, transporting, raking, setting up barnyard, cleaning areas and crates, etc.</p> </li><li> <p>Leads training workshops for educators.</p> </li><li> <p>Helps develop programs and curriculum.</p> </li><li> <p>Helps plan and facilitate large, annual special events.</p> </li><li> <p>Coordinates resources, including volunteers, sponsors, supplies & materials, and databases.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists with light maintenance of building, trails, grounds, gardens, habitats, etc.</p> </li><li> <p>Required to work a flexible schedule that may include nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.</p> </li></ul> <p>Performs other duties as required.</p>
