This position is a one-year, renewable, 9-month (1.0 FTE) appointment with expectations for teaching, advising, and service. The position is responsible for undergraduate courses in the general areas of animal health/physiology, management and/or welfare. The successful candidate will teach existing courses that currently support the Animal and Veterinary Sciences major but will also have the opportunity to develop and offer new courses in their area of expertise that complement the existing curriculum.</p> <p>Through teaching, research, and service, the Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences strives to strengthen the ability of our students, faculty, and stakeholders to meet current and future local, national, and global challenges and opportunities. The approximately 350 undergraduate majors and minors in the Animal and Veterinary Sciences (AVS) program follow either a general animal science path (with interests in zoo, exotic, and companion animals; laboratory animals; or agricultural livestock) or a pre-veterinary/pre-professional path. We are specifically seeking a colleague who will demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching and advising and collaborate with other faculty to that end. Furthermore, we seek a colleague who shares our commitment to mentoring and supporting students and staff from diverse backgrounds and to developing more inclusive and equitable academic practices.</p> <p>This is a full-time, non-tenure track, 9-month academic appointment that is 100% teaching, and consists of a typical workload of 12 credits per semester (i.e., 3-4 courses per semester). NOTE: This position has no research component as part of the workload.</p> <p>BASIC FUNCTION:</p> <p>The duties of the Animal Science Assistant Teaching Professor (teaching with no research component)) will include teaching undergraduate courses in the general areas of animal health, management and welfare. Specific courses include, but are not limited to animal nutrition, animal diseases, animal anatomy laboratory and animal management or welfare courses in the candidate's area of expertise. Typical enrollment for these courses is 40-100 students.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <p>In addition to the above teaching duties, the Assistant Teaching Professor will assist in course management and the development of pedagogies to enhance student learning and retention. This may include curriculum revision or development, experiential learning opportunities and supervision of undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants.</p> <p>Additional responsibilities include advising/mentoring undergraduate students, assisting with supervision of student clubs and organizations, and participating in other activities (e.g. student recruitment) supportive of the Department of Fisheries, Animal & Veterinary Sciences and the College of the Environment and Life Sciences.</p> <p>QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>REQUIRED:</p> <ol> <li> <p>Master of Science degree in Animal Science or closely related area; OR an earned PhD or are within eight months of completion of a PhD in Animal Science or closely related area; OR a veterinary degree (DVM or VMD).</p> </li><li> <p>Demonstrated teaching experience and responsibilities at the college or university</p> </li></ol> <p>level as an instructor, lecturer, or teaching assistant in animal science or closely related area.</p> <ol start="3"> <li>Demonstrated content expertise in animal nutrition, health/physiology, management </li></ol> <p>and/or welfare.</p> <ol start="4"> <li> <p>Demonstrated skills in interactive teaching including hands-on demonstrations and active learning.</p> </li><li> <p>Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of students and faculty.</p> </li><li> <p>Demonstrated ability to function independently and collaboratively in a complex academic environment.</p> </li><li> <p>Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communications.</p> </li></ol> <p>PREFERRED:</p> <ol> <li> <p>Earned PhD in Animal Science or closely related area; OR a veterinary degree (DVM or VMD).</p> </li><li> <p>At least two years of experience with independent teaching of one or more undergraduate course(s) in animal science at a college or university.</p> </li><li> <p>Expertise in animal nutrition, animal diseases, and animal anatomy as demonstrated by teaching or research experience.</p> </li><li> <p>Experience using on-line teaching tools and learning management systems at the college level.</p> </li><li> <p>Experience with curriculum development and learning outcomes assessment.</p> </li></ol> <p>_<strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>__</strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></p> <p>The University of Rhode Island is an equal-opportunity employer committed to the principles of affirmative action.
