<p>HOT SPRINGS SCHOOL DISTRICT</p> <p>Job Description for</p> <p>Director of Special Education</p> <p>DEPARTMENT: Administrative JOB STATUS: Full Time</p> <p>POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Special Education Staff REPORTS TO: Superintendent</p> <p>GRADE/LEVEL: N/A F.L.S.A: Exempt</p> <p>WORK SCHEDULE: 240 contracted days</p> <p>POSITION SUMMARY</p> <p>Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Director of Special Education is responsible for the leadership, administration, and supervision of the district special education program's daily operational functions and services. Directing the planning, delivery, assessment, and ongoing improvement of special education programs, this position formulates and interprets policies and procedures; ensures compliance with state and federal regulations; administers a budget; and supervises departmental personnel.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</p> <ul> <li>To supervise and administer all district programs for children with disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act (IDEIA, 2004) </li><li>To provide on-going, regularly scheduled consultation to special and regular education personnel in the district </li><li>To designate appropriate professionals responsible for appraisal, programming and implementation activities as specified by state guidelines </li><li>To initiate and administer programs to locate, identify, and evaluate students with suspected disabilities </li><li>To monitor operation of district programs for children with disabilities to ensure operation in accordance with state adopted and approved policies, procedures and guidelines </li><li>To provide on-going consultative assistance, in conjunction with assigned special education teachers, to regular education teachers serving students with disabilities </li><li>To maintain information on and liaison with other public and private schools, agencies and individuals who provide services to students with disabilities in the district </li><li>To participate and provide leadership, as appropriate, in the development of the district ACSIP (Indistar) and special education budget for approval by the district superintendent </li><li>To serve as a liaison with the ADE Special Education Unit in matters concerning education of children with disabilities </li><li>To serve as a local liaison with parents and with parent organizations, including school-based parent centers </li><li>To perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by employee's supervisor or the superintendent </li></ul> <p>EDUCATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>Master's Degree as a Special Education Specialist with an accredited educational institution. Other requirements per job description.</p> <p>EXPERIENCE</p> <p>Three years experience in a job related field or educational equivalency is preferred, but not required.</p> <p>PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>Hand-eye and mind-eye coordination. Constant hearing; intermittent speaking, standing, walking and writing. Frequent carrying, keyboarding, and other repetitive movements. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds as needed to move objects often.</p> <p>OTHER REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>Excellent oral and written communication skills. Skills in human relations, leadership, and conflict management. Knowledgeable of teaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students. Demonstrated skills in the use of technology to enhance student learning.</p> <p>WORK ENVIRONMENT</p> <p>The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
