<p>Job Purpose</p> <p>The Application Developer works under the general direction of the Application Development Manager and is responsible for the day-to-day administration, troubleshooting, maintenance and application development primarily related to web based applications in PHP5+ using Object Oriented design.</p> <p>Company Description</p> <p>Progress Rail stands at the intersection of legacy and innovation-driving the future of rail with a pioneering spirit. At Progress Rail, the team is not just building the future of rail-they are making history every day.</p> <p>Education / Training</p> <p>2 or 4-year degree in CS, CIS, Software or related degree.</p> <p>Key Job Elements</p> <ul> <li>Be the point of contact and subject matter expert for one or more applications or business areas </li><li>Manage projects as assigned </li><li>Perform requirements gathering and analysis for change requests or larger projects </li><li>Development, support, and maintenance tasks as assigned </li><li>Design solutions based on requirements, feature lists, and/or bug reports </li><li>Troubleshoot and debug code based on bug reports </li><li>Explain requirements to and write designs for less experienced developers </li><li>Coach less experienced developers in areas of requirements, design and construction </li><li>Adhere to all Company, Department, and Workgroup policies and procedures </li><li>Perform personal management of assigned tasks </li><li>Report status of tasks as directed </li><li>Participate in department, workgroup, and project meetings and discussions </li><li>Review work of others and offer constructive feedback </li><li>Be receptive to guidance, coaching, and constructive feedback </li><li>Travel and on call support as required </li></ul> <p>Qualifications and Experience</p> <ul> <li>3+ years work experience in software development field </li><li>Experience leading software development projects </li><li>Experience gathering and analyzing requirements for software development projects </li><li>Experience documenting requirements and designing software solutions </li><li>Experience documenting designs for solutions with the expectation that other developers will follow the design to implement the solution </li><li>Experience developing web based application software </li><li>Strong work ethic </li><li>Team player </li><li>Teachable attitude </li><li>Self-motivated to learn </li><li>Must be willing to travel and be on call to provide on off hours support as required </li></ul> <p>Job Specific Technology and Skills:</p> <ul> <li>3+ years experience developing web based applications in PHP5+ using Object Oriented design </li><li>Experience with other web based development technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) </li><li>Experience developing web based applications with Oracle as backend RDBMS </li><li>Experience developing web based applications for the Linux operating system </li></ul> <p>Expectations and Characteristics of a Candidate</p> <ul> <li>Has a strong background in software development </li><li>Can work independently covering all project areas and responsibilities </li><li>Has the ability gather and analyze requirements, determine features needed to meet the requirements, and design solutions to implement those features </li><li>Has the ability to explain requirements and write designs in a way that that less experienced developers can follow </li><li>Has the ability to read and debug code written either personally or by someone else </li><li>Thinks about design at a 'system' level. </li><li>Has the ability, knowledge, and personality to coach less experienced developers in areas of requirements gathering and analysis, design, and construction </li><li>Has the ability to provide leadership at a project and/or application level </li></ul> <p>Preferred Skills</p> <ul> <li>Experience using version control tools and following a version control workflow (preferably Git) </li><li>Experience using PHPUnit for automating unit tests </li><li>Experience integrating applications via messaging systems (preferably RabbitMQ) </li></ul> <p>EEO</p> <p>Progress Rail is an Equal Opportunity Employer, including Veterans and Individuals with Disabilities.</p> <p>Benefits</p> <p>Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance, and experience.
