This position provides assistance to the two full-time Volunteer Coordinators, as well as leading events and the Polk County Conservation Wildlife Monitoring Program, among other tasks. We are looking for an energetic, engaging, and well-organized individual to help lead our Volunteer Program and provide opportunities for service and learning for the citizens of Polk County.</p> <p>Under general supervision of the Natural Resources Manager and direct guidance of the Volunteer Coordinators. This position assist with the coordination of a multi-faceted volunteer program for the Conservation Board. Works with unit managers and volunteers to complete park projects.</p> <p>Illustrative Examples of Work</p> <ul> <li> <p>Assists with the development, implementation and management of volunteer programs and events in county parks and trails.</p> </li><li> <p>Provides support to Volunteer Coordinators at volunteer events, projects and programs. Includes weekends, evenings, and large quarterly events.</p> </li><li> <p>Oversees volunteer projects as determined by the Coordinators.</p> </li><li> <p>Provides feedback and assistance in all projects, events, and programs, both current and future.</p> </li><li> <p>Aides in preparation and cleanup of events.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists in duties related to onboarding new volunteers and subsequent trainings.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists in development of promotional literature and communications.</p> </li><li> <p>Creates marketing pieces for volunteer recruitment, retention, events, and programs.</p> </li><li> <p>Submits and manages volunteer events through the appropriate community resources and online calendars in a timely manner.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists with monthly and quarterly communications.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists in maintaining volunteer databases and applicable data entry. Develops a program with a special emphasis on recruiting volunteers to assist in database management.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists on projects as assigned by the Natural Resources Manager and/or Volunteer Coordinators.</p> </li><li> <p>Performs related duties as may be required.</p> </li></ul> <p>Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of current conservation, natural resources, and environmental issues. Understands the principles and methods used in natural resources restoration. </li><li>Knowledge of general construction methods and the ability to lead volunteer groups in hands-on projects. </li><li>The ability to operate the tools and machinery necessary to perform the duties associated with natural resources, construction, park, and basic trail construction/maintenance (i.e. hand tools, brush chipper, mowers, chainsaws, etc.) including the general safety guidelines and practices associated with such equipment. </li><li>Detail oriented and highly organized with the ability to multitask. </li><li>Ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast paced environment. </li><li>Ability to work frequent weekends and evenings. </li><li>Highly efficient with a computer, email, Adobe, and Microsoft Office Suite. </li><li>Ability to operate audio/visual equipment. </li><li>Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. </li><li>Ability to read, write, and speak English. </li><li>Ability to facilitate meetings with volunteer groups/individuals and perform public speaking duties as required. </li><li>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other agency representatives, partnership organizations, media, volunteers, and general public using courtesy, patience, and tact. </li><li>Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification. </li><li>Ability to obtain and maintain a commercial pesticide applicator's license in categories 2 and 6 issued the State of Iowa. </li><li>Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license, Class D endorsement, issued by the State of Iowa. </li><li>Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. </li><li>Ability to supervise volunteers working with tools and equipment according to project specifications. </li></ul> <p>Training and Experience</p> <ul> <li>Associates degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science, natural resources, communications, or public relations/marketing. </li><li>One year experience supervising volunteers preferred. </li><li>Any equivalent combination of training and experience which will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed above. </li></ul> <p>Special Requirements</p> <ul> <li>A criminal background check is required. </li><li>Pre-employment drug screen is required. </li><li>Candidate must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and Physical Capacity testing to ensure candidate meets the essential physical requirements of the position as shown on the attached Physical Capacity Profile. </li></ul> <p>Polk County is committed to providing a diverse work environment that is representative, at all levels, of the citizens we serve.
