<p>About WSDOT</p> <p>The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a multimodal agency with a global reputation for excellence. In addition to maintaining over 20,000 lane miles of state highway and 4,100 bridges, WSDOT leads an award-winning Active Transportation Plan, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and operates the largest ferry system in the nation!</p> <p>The Opportunity</p> <p>WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 4 to serve as a key member of the Southwest Region Maintenance program, supporting the safe and efficient operation of the state highway system. This role helps maintain highway infrastructure, facilities, and fleet while responding to emergencies, weather events, and operational needs. The incumbent provides critical support to four Maintenance Supervisors within Area 1 and acts as a liaison with external agencies to address right of way safety concerns and coordinate cleanup efforts. This position plays a vital role in ensuring safe travel for the public while contributing to environmental stewardship and a respectful, collaborative work environment.</p> <p>What to Expect</p> <p>Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week (four 10-hour shifts). May require nights, weekends, holidays, standby, and call-back to respond to emergencies; must report to the duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call. Responds to emergency situations in all weather conditions, working independently or as part of a team, including extended and alternate shifts as needed.</p> <p>Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 4 will:</p> <ul> <li>Plans, budgets, schedules, and implements highway maintenance activities, including repair, reconstruction, and rest area operations. </li><li>Supports supervisors and superintendents by coordinating work activities, recommending staffing levels, and ensuring effective program delivery. </li><li>Creates, reviews, and audits maintenance records and reports for accuracy, including time, equipment, fuel, and personnel data. </li><li>Enters, tracks, and audits maintenance activities in systems such as HATS, WZDB, and TSMS to ensure accurate documentation and reporting. </li><li>Manages inventory across multiple control points, including procurement, stockpiles, third-party repairs, and equipment coordination. </li><li>Supervises and leads maintenance operations, including developing biennial plans, managing budgets, and coordinating materials and supplies. </li><li>Coordinates unlawful dwelling cleanup and removal efforts with law enforcement and partner agencies while ensuring safe handling of hazardous materials. </li><li>Inspects roadways and right of way conditions, maintains safe travel through snow and ice response, and reviews contract work for compliance with plans and standards. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications</p> <p>To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of Roadway Maintenance Practices: Demonstrates understanding of roadway maintenance procedures and public safety operations. </li><li>Ability to Implement Traffic Control Procedures: Skilled in performing traffic control according to MUTCD standards, including planning and placement of signs, cones, and barrels, as well as executing flagging duties. </li><li>Skill in Operating Commercial Vehicles: Proficient in operating commercial vehicles and equipment. </li><li>Effective Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing, and provide exemplary customer service to the public, coworkers, and stakeholders. </li><li>Commitment to Safety Protocols: Ability to perform work safely and responsibly at all times. </li><li>Leadership and Teamwork Abilities: Ability to lead or support a diverse workforce by providing clear direction, fostering teamwork, and making sound decisions in demanding or high-pressure situations. </li><li>Independent Work and Prioritization Skills: Demonstrates the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple assignments while applying expertise in highway maintenance operations. </li><li>Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth. </li><li>Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others. </li></ul> <p>In addition to the above, the following are also required: </p> <ul> <li>Valid Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement, without airbrake restrictions. </li><li>Valid Traffic Control/Flagging card or possesses the ability to obtain Flagger Certification within six (6) months of employment. </li><li>Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain. </li><li>Work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water </li><li>Ability to work weekends to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. </li><li>Ability to report in service to the assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after- hours call. </li><li>Ability to work alternate and emergency shifts and respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. </li><li>Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. </li></ul> <p>It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of Highway/Roadway Maintenance: Understands transportation infrastructure and maintenance activities required for highway and roadway upkeep. </li><li>Service Area Familiarity: Demonstrates awareness of the local service area to effectively respond to community and operational needs. </li><li>Ability to Perform Winter Snow and Ice Control: Experience supporting safe travel conditions through participation in winter snow and ice control operations. </li><li>Familiarity with TEF Equipment and Resources: Understands and efficiently utilizes TEF-owned equipment to support operational needs. </li></ul> <p>Important Notes </p> <ul> <li>This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs. </li><li>This position is not eligible for remote work. </li><li>This position is subject to the drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
