<p>General Overview of Position</p> <p>As a key member of the Kenosha Public Library's administrative team, the Assistant Director inspires a high level of service and innovation among the KPL team. Performs administrative, managerial, and supervisory work; oversees public service, communication, and programming functions at all libraries; contributes to the overall operation of finances and facilities of the library; serves as director in their absence; promotes and evaluates efforts to improve, innovate and grow service to all residents within the Kenosha community.</p> <p>Leads planning, coordination, and oversight of KPL's public-facing operations, including outreach and programming strategy, in alignment with the library's strategic plan. Provides support to the Director in budget development, long-range capital planning, policy development, and organizational leadership. For more information about Kenosha Public Library and the Assistant Director position, check out ourwebsite!</p> <p>Example of Duties & Responsibilities</p> <p>Position Summary</p> <p>The primary functions of the Assistant Director include managing, coordinating, and supporting all public service and programming efforts; supervising and evaluating the Youth and Family Services, Outreach Services, and Branch Managers; participating in hiring staff library-wide; collaborating on annual and project budgets; assisting in policy and procedure development and administration. This position is supervised by the Director, with considerable latitude granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The principal duties are performed in the community, libraries, and a general office environment.</p> <p>This position also provides administrative leadership for the development and approval of organization-wide programming, outreach calendars, and event evaluations. Collaborates with managers to identify service gaps, recommend service innovations, and approve new public services in alignment with KPL's goals. Acts as the first escalation point for public feedback requiring administrative intervention.</p> <p>Examples of Work</p> <ul> <li> <p>Participates in the review and development of library policies, procedures and practices; assists in interpreting policies to staff and general public</p> </li><li> <p>Builds a high performing team of managers and coordinators that supports the library experience and the organization's goals. Meets and confers with coordinators, managers, and other staff to plan projects, services, and programs.</p> </li><li> <p>Represents the Library to the public, community organizations</p> </li><li> <p>Prepares for and attends all Library Board meetings</p> </li><li> <p>Assists in the development and implementation of a strategic plan that promotes the Library's mission and vision</p> </li><li> <p>Promotes a culture for positive change and an environment for excellence in hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of staff</p> </li><li> <p>Guides the organization in creating and enhancing positive customer experiences in all points of contact.</p> </li><li> <p>Promotes intellectual freedom and equal access to information through policy development and staff training</p> </li><li> <p>Encourages and supports outreach efforts to meet collection and programming needs of library residents</p> </li><li> <p>Recommends and coordinates the implementation of products and services</p> </li><li> <p>Coordinates the library's public services evaluation efforts, working with the Director and managers to analyze usage data, monitor community needs, and adjust services as needed</p> </li><li> <p>Works with the Director, Branch Managers, and Maintenance Superintendent to assess facility needs, establish long-term capital goals, and participate in planning of renovations and new construction projects</p> </li><li> <p>Serves on administrative teams, including marketing, scheduling, and strategic planning, and acts as back-up for these functions when necessary</p> </li><li> <p>Manages outreach and event calendars in partnership with department and branch leadership, and ensures communication with the Director about high-visibility or sensitive programming</p> </li><li> <p>Participates in cross-departmental meetings to review grant and award proposals, and supports the development of applications and reports</p> </li></ul> <p>Requirements</p> <p>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required</p> <ul> <li> <p>Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.</p> </li><li> <p>Minimum of 7 years successful public library and/or system experience.</p> </li><li> <p>Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible administrative experience.</p> </li><li> <p>Knowledge of public library operations, programs, and services and current trends and developments in the field of public library services, customer service, technology, information services, outreach services, adult services, youth services.</p> </li><li> <p>Reference and Readers' Advisory principles and practices.</p> </li><li> <p>Library technology and electronic resources.</p> </li><li> <p>Project management, operational improvement and change management.</p> </li><li> <p>Processes for preparing and administering budgets.</p> </li><li> <p>Advanced computer skills; proficiency with Google Apps.</p> </li><li> <p>Supervisory principles, practices, and methods.</p> </li><li> <p>Strong ability to facilitate interdepartmental collaboration, problem-solving, and planning in high-stakes or time-sensitive situations.</p> </li><li> <p>Comfort with acting as Manager-in-Charge in crisis response situations and participating in the review and implementation of emergency procedures.</p> </li></ul> <p>Physical and Working Conditions</p> <ul> <li> <p>Far vision at 20 feet or further; near vision at 20 inches or less.</p> </li><li> <p>Talking and hearing.</p> </li><li> <p>Sitting, standing, walking, climbing (including stairs) and stooping, bending, twisting and reaching (up, across, and down).
