<p>DEFINITION</p> <p>THIS IS AN EXTRA HELP, NON-BENEFITED, IN-PERSON POSITION</p> <p>ONLY APPLICANTS WHO ARE WILLING TO ACCEPT ASSIGNMENT TO ANY OF THE COURT LOCATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED</p> <p>PAYRATE; $350 for Half-Day, $600 for Full Day</p> <p>Under general direction, accurately transcribes verbatim all required or requested court hearings. Produces official, verbatim transcripts of court proceedings in conformity with court standards; accurately reads back the record upon request; and performs related duties.</p> <p>This is a journey level classification in which incumbents are responsible for independently providing court reporting or voice writing services within assigned courtroom or other court proceedings. Work may involve real time transcription, traditional stenographic recording, or use of voice writing media.</p> <p>TYPICAL DUTIES</p> <p>Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:</p> <ul> <li>Makes a verbatim record of all court proceedings; </li><li>Provides real-time transcription or reads back record of proceedings; </li><li>Asks judge and other speakers for clarification of testimony, instructions, orders, or actions; </li><li>Produces and certifies formal, written transcripts; archives court reports and transcripts; </li><li>Organizes and ensures official records security; </li><li>Receives and processes transcript requests; estimates cost of transcripts; </li><li>Researches medical, legal and technical terminology as well as case citations and related information; </li><li>Develops and modifies custom software dictionaries; sets up and maintains court reporting or voice writing, transcription, and archival equipment. </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>Experience identified below must be within the last ten years.</p> <p>Education:</p> <p>In accordance with Section 8016 of the California Business and Professions Code, official court reporters or voice writers working in any court shall possess a current Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) or Voice Writer license, or both, issued by the Court Reporters' Board of California.</p> <p>Desirable: Ability to report Realtime.</p> <p>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES</p> <p>Knowledge of:</p> <ul> <li>Laws, regulation and practice relating to court reporting or voice writing and transcription; </li><li>Legal terminology, court operations and courtroom procedure; courtroom etiquette and conventions; </li><li>Court reporting or voice writing computer software and equipment. </li></ul> <p>Skills in:</p> <ul> <li>Reporting court proceedings at a rate of 200 words per minute. </li></ul> <p>Ability to:</p> <ul> <li>Simultaneously listen to and make verbatim record of court proceedings; </li><li>Pay attention to conversational detail; </li><li>Operate and maintain court reporting or voice writing computer equipment; </li><li>Work in presence of court audience. </li></ul> <p>National Court Reporter Association real-time certification preferred.</p> <p>Physical Requirements with or without reasonable accommodations:</p> <ul> <li>To be able to legally drive or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions including field investigations, training and meeting at any of the court or other offsite locations. </li><li>Ability to move, set-up and use a court-reporting or voice writing machine for extended periods of time. </li><li>Ability to use a personal computer and its peripherals. </li><li>Ability to sit for extended periods of time. </li><li>Ability to work in an environment that includes frequent interruptions and simultaneous attention to multiple tasks. </li><li>Ability to grasp and/or manipulate files, binders, pieces of paper or small objects. </li><li>Frequent hand, fingers and/or wrist motion. </li><li>Ability to work alone or closely with others. </li><li>Occasional bending and stooping. </li><li>May require occasional lifting of files and books weighing up to 10 lbs. </li><li>May require movement throughout the courthouse and other court location for work, training, meetings or other work-related functions. </li></ul> <p>IMPORTANT RECRUITMENT INFORMATION</p> <p>This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified Per Diem Court Reporters.
