Full Time Shift Day Work Schedule Summary</p> <p>TBD</p> <p>VP Area Academic Affairs Department 00116 - School of Biological Sciences Location Campus City Salt Lake City, UT Type of Recruitment External Posting Pay Rate Range 70000 to 80000 Close Date 05/19/2025 Priority Review Date (Note - Posting may close at any time) 05/16/2025 Job Summary</p> <p>The Laboratory Manager in the Karasov Lab in the University of Utah's School of Biological Sciences will oversee the daily operations of a cutting-edge research lab specializing in microbial genomics and plant biology. This role will engage in experimental and computational biology while mentoring the next generation of scientists. This position will involve the theoretical and practical application of knowledge in biological science.</p> <p>Responsibilities</p> <p>The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:</p> <ul> <li>Laboratory Management to maintain the organization and efficient operation of the lab, including ordering supplies, equipment maintenance, and ensuring compliance with safety regulation. </li><li>Manage and track lab budgets and resources. </li><li>Provide research support by conducting experiments involving molecular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics techniques. </li><li>Program in Python and R to analyze data, develop computation pipelines, and generate visualizations. </li><li>Troubleshoot protocols, innovate experimental approaches, and contribute to manuscript preparation. </li><li>Provide hands-on training to graduate students and lab members in molecular techniques, bioinformatics tools, and data analysis methods. </li><li>Develop and deliver workshops or tutorials on computational methods, including programming and software usage. </li></ul> <p>This job description is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications required of employees assigned to the job.</p> <p>Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required</p> <p>Nearly Continuously: Office environment.</p> <p>Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required</p> <p>Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking.</p> <p>Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking.</p> <p>Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <p>Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 4 - 6 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department.
