<p>Job Description</p> <p>Overview</p> <p>Counselor - Behavioral Health MS (Licensed)</p> <p>Location: Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit at IUH Bloomington Hospital</p> <p>Position Type: Primarily Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, with rotating weekends (every 4th weekend) and holiday rotations</p> <p>Position Overview:</p> <p>The Behavioral Health Counselor facilitates patient involvement in treatment and education within a supportive treatment milieu. The role involves conducting individual, group, and family counseling, performing utilization review, discharge planning, and providing crisis intervention. The counselor collaborates closely with healthcare team members to ensure patients receive timely, safe services, and families are connected with necessary resources and education.</p> <p>Key Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Facilitate patient engagement in treatment and education within a supportive environment </li><li>Perform individual, group, and family therapy using evidence-based practices (CBT, MI, DBT) </li><li>Conduct all functions related to utilization review and discharge planning to ensure safe, timely, and effective patient care transitions </li><li>Communicate and collaborate with all members of the healthcare team to facilitate the episode of care </li><li>Interpret and communicate complex patient/family needs, modeling caring and professional practices to other caregivers </li><li>Assess psychosocial risk factors through evaluation of prior functioning levels, support systems, reactions to illness, and coping skills </li><li>Counsel patients and families regarding emotional, social, and financial impacts of illness/disability </li><li>Access and mobilize family and community resources to meet patient needs </li><li>Conduct mental health assessments upon physician referral </li><li>Provide therapeutic intervention to facilitate complex discharge planning </li><li>Serve as the point person for cases involving child abuse/neglect, elder abuse/neglect, institutional abuse, and domestic violence </li><li>Act as liaison between Indiana University Health and local child and adult protective teams (APS/CPS) </li><li>Provide intervention in guardianship (temporary/permanent), foster care, adoption, and mental health Level II placements </li><li>Maintain principles, practices, and techniques of crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques </li><li>Provide a safe, therapeutic environment and instruct patients in daily activities and programming </li></ul> <p>Qualifications & Requirements:</p> <ul> <li>Education: Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related mental health field required </li><li>Experience: 3-5 years of relevant healthcare, mental health, or community-based experience preferred </li><li>Licensure: Current Indiana license as an LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, LCAC, or HSPP required </li><li>Certifications: </li></ul> <p>o Crisis intervention certification required within 90 days of hire</p> <p>o BLS certification required within 30 days of hire</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge & Skills: </li></ul> <p>o Psychosocial assessments, therapeutic counseling, and crisis intervention techniques</p> <p>o Knowledge of disease processes and human behavior related to health-related social needs</p> <p>o Implementation of evidence-based practices (CBT, MI, DBT)</p> <p>o Knowledge of legal mandates for child and adult protective services (state and county)</p> <p>o Principles of growth, development, and end-of-life care</p> <p>o Ability to create a safe and therapeutic environment, including instruction for daily activities and programming</p> <p>o Basic proficiency in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)</p> <p>o Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with community agencies, law enforcement, schools, probation, and other organizations</p> <p>Core Competencies:</p> <ul> <li>Effective communication and active listening </li><li>Crisis management and de-escalation techniques </li><li>Collaboration within multidisciplinary teams </li><li>Maintaining confidentiality and HIPAA compliance </li><li>Compassionate, culturally sensitive care delivery </li></ul> <p>Join our team and help deliver compassionate, evidence-based behavioral health services to improve patient outcomes and community well-being.</p> <p>To learn more about our benefits, visit: IU Health Benefits</p> <p>Interested?</p> <p>Apply today to become a Counselor - Behavioral Health MS (Licensed) with Indiana University Health!</p>
