<p>Close All</p> <p>Job Summary</p> <p>The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) in Boulder, Colorado, is seeking a Temporary Researcher to work in the Environmental Data Science Innovation and Impact Lab (ESIIL) and Earth Lab.</p> <p>Core responsibilities of the ESIIL/Earth Lab Temporary Researcher include i) consulting with and advising researchers on how to optimize and scale their code and workflows on HPC or the cloud; ii) instructing users on how to utilize CU, Earth Lab, and ESIIL cyberinfrastructure including leading and assisting with training events; iii) assisting with the development and maintenance of ESIIL/Earth Lab cyberinfrastructure in coordination with key partners (e.g., CyVerse, Research Computing, CU Boulder and CIRES IT); iv) developing and maintaining open source software (in R and Python) and key databases with documentation for the community; v) helping maintain the Earth Lab and ESIIL data and code repositories, websites and learning portal (earthdatascience.org) in coordination with CIRES IT including lesson builds and markdown rendering; and vi) helping to maintain front-end Drupal experience to support earthdatascience.org and the ESIIL Network Portal. This position will also contribute to data science and research projects, as appropriate. The candidate should have excellent technical and communication skills and be comfortable working in a team environment.</p> <p>This is a 6-month position that may be extended for an additional 6 months. An institute at the University of Colorado Boulder, we have partnered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) since 1967. Our areas of expertise include weather and climate, wildfire and water, changes at Earth's poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, solid Earth sciences, and more. Our researchers work in 10 CU Boulder departments and eight NOAA laboratories and centers.</p> <p>Esiil</p> <p>The Environmental Data Science Innovation & Impact Lab (ESIIL) is an NSF-funded data synthesis center led by the University of Colorado Boulder in collaboration with NSF's CyVerse at the University of Arizona and the University of Oslo. ESIIL's mission is to empower a broad community to accelerate open Environmental Data Science. ESIIL enables a global community of environmental data scientists to demonstrate the wealth of environmental data and emerging analytics to develop science-based solutions to solve pressing challenges in environmental sciences. ESIIL's research community generates discoveries and novel approaches through 1) cutting-edge team science, 2) innovative tools and collaborative cyberinfrastructures, 3) data-science education and training, and 4) building broad collaborations and networks.</p> <p>Earth Lab</p> <p>Earth Lab is part of CIRES and CU-Boulder's Grand Challenge: Our Space, Our Future. Earth Lab's mission is to harness the data revolution using Earth observations from aerospace platforms (drone, aircraft, and space) and other sources (e.g., social media etc.) to better understand the pace and pattern of environmental change. Earth Lab capitalizes on the data deluge from Space to accelerate global environmental change science, reducing environmental risk and surprise by understanding and predicting slow and abrupt Earth system changes, and trains a new generation of data scientists in Earth analytics.</p> <p>What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be</p> <ul> <li>Consult with and advise scientific researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder on efficient, appropriate, powerful computational and informatics approaches for advancing scientific investigations in the programming languages they use (likely R and Python). </li><li>Assist with the development and maintenance of ESIIL and Earth Lab's Analytics and Cyberinfrastructure Hub, and instruct users on how to use the system. </li><li>Work with ESIIL and Earth Lab, and cyberinfrastructure collaborators to optimize interoperability and long-term sustainability of ESIIL and Earth Lab communities' codebases and datasets as open generalized resources for science researchers. </li><li>Participate in training efforts, including workshops for postdocs, graduate students, or professionals. </li><li>Perform data integration and machine learning analyses on large, heterogeneous datasets to support scientific research and tool development. </li><li>Participate in solutions for the integration of diverse remote sensing and in-situ datasets. </li></ul> <p>What You Should Know</p> <ul> <li>This is temporary position, paid on an hourly basis. </li><li>This position is not eligible for vacation leave, holidays, annual merit pay increases, nor employee health, retirement or related benefits, except those required by law. </li><li>This position will accrue 0.034 hours of sick leave for every hour worked, and accruals will be calculated after each bi-weekly payroll cycle. </li><li>This temporary position cannot extend past the maximum of 12 months. </li></ul> <p>What We Can Offer</p> <ul> <li>The hourly pay range for this position is $30/hour - $37.50/hour. Be Boulder.</p> <p>What We Require</p> <ul> <li>Bachelors degree in statistics, applied mathematics, computer sciences, or related fields with experience working with science groups. </li><li>Proficient experience with R and Python. </li><li>Proficient experience with Docker containers. </li><li>Proficient experience with HPC and/or cloud-computing platforms. </li></ul> <p>What You Will Need</p> <ul> <li>Quantitative skills in applied computer vision, natural language processing, or other deep learning applications. </li><li>Quantitative skills in statistics and informatics using Earth/ atmospheric/ geoscience/ biological data to integrate information across scales. </li><li>Communication skills to work well with other data scientists/researchers in face-to-face and remote collaborations. </li><li>Knowledge of statistical and artificial intelligence methods to explore and analyze large scientific data sets with programming languages such as Python and R. </li><li>Knowledge in data processing and manipulation, including formatting, ingestion, data cleaning, and documentation. </li><li>Knowledge of open source software development and documentation, including containerization and GitHub and Docker Hub management. </li><li>Desire to educate academic researchers on how to use these tools, which includes a strong service background. </li></ul> <p>What We Would Like You to Have</p> <p>Please note that while the position details both required and preferred skills and experience, we invite applicants to apply even if they do not have the preferred skills and experience outlined in this section.
