<p>Description</p> <p>Oregon Episcopal School seeks an Assistant Head of Upper School for Academics (AHA) to begin duties in August 2026. As such, we educate toward a larger purpose - toward inclusion and respect, service and justice, and commitment beyond ourselves.</p> <p>JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Head of Upper School for Academics serves as the primary academic leader in the division, providing strategic and operational vision and oversight for the Upper School's educational program and learning support systems. This role advances curriculum design and review, supports faculty growth, guides academic policies, participates in admissions and course placement, and uses data to inform academic program decisions.</p> <p>As a member of the US Leadership Team, the person in this role works in close partnership with the Head of Upper School and collaborates with faculty, department chairs, Learning Support, the Director of Faculty Growth and Development, and academic leaders in the Lower and Middle Schools to ensure alignment, clarity, and excellence across the K-12 program. Through this work, the position helps sustain a learning environment grounded in equity, high expectations, and student well-being. The role also supervises the Educational Technology Coordinator, Health and Wellness teacher, US Librarian, and Community Engagement Coordinator.</p> <p>In addition to core academic leadership responsibilities, the Assistant Head represents the division in parent meetings, grade-level events, admissions programs, and broader community gatherings. The position advises a cohort of 5-8 students, and participates in and supports co-curricular programming, including Winterim leadership, student events, and cross-divisional initiatives. With approval, the Assistant Head may teach a course in the Upper School.</p> <p>Strategic Academic Leadership</p> <ul> <li> <p>Partner closely with the Head of Upper School to design, evaluate, and sustain a mission-aligned academic program that is challenging, student-centered, and inclusive.</p> </li><li> <p>Supervise and mentor department chairs.</p> </li><li> <p>Co-create and maintain coherent systems and cycles for ongoing curriculum review with department chairs to build cross-department alignment, and support each department in strengthening its internal coherence around rigor, assessment practices, and the student experience.</p> </li><li> <p>Ensure consistency in the pedagogy and implementation of Outcome-Based Learning.</p> </li><li> <p>Lead cross-divisional coordination with Lower and Middle School academic leaders to ensure continuity, alignment, and smooth student transitions.</p> </li><li> <p>Develop and refine academic policies, collaborating with leadership and faculty to ensure they promote clarity, equity, and consistency for students and families.</p> </li><li> <p>Work with the Head of Upper School and Registrar to plan and manage the annual academic calendar.</p> </li><li> <p>Oversee grading, comments, and reporting cycles, including all workflows, deadlines, expectations, and guidance documents for faculty and students.</p> </li><li> <p>Oversee Teaching Assistant program in partnership with the Director of Faculty Growth and Development and the Upper School Learning Specialists.</p> </li><li> <p>Support the School's commitment to academic excellence as articulated in Leading with Purpose: OES Strategic Plan 2030, through the development of signature academic programs in the Upper School.</p> </li></ul> <p>Curricular Innovation & Data-Informed Decision-Making</p> <ul> <li>Lead collaborative processes with the Head of Upper School, department chairs, and the Director of College Counseling to review and refine graduation requirements. </li><li>Foster faculty innovation by supporting the design of new electives, advanced pathways, and interdisciplinary courses. </li><li>Use data analysis to illuminate potential inequities, identify emerging trends, and inform program and policy decisions. </li></ul> <p>Faculty Growth, Coaching & Professional Development</p> <ul> <li>Support recruitment and hiring for all Upper School academic positions. </li><li>As part of the Faculty Growth Cycle, conduct classroom observations and provide actionable, growth-oriented feedback aligned with learning and teaching frameworks. </li><li>Collaborate with the Director of Faculty Growth and Development to plan and deliver professional learning in pedagogy, assessment, equity, and instructional innovation. </li><li>Partner with Counseling and Learning Support to strengthen faculty capacity in differentiation, executive functioning, and culturally responsive teaching. </li></ul> <p>Student Academic Progress and Support</p> <ul> <li>Serve as a key member of the Student Support Team, bringing a lens of academic equity, consistency, proactivity, and early intervention. </li><li>Oversee and manage interims, comments, and reports; lead refinements to these systems to ensure they are meaningful tools for communication and growth. </li><li>Meet with students and families as needed to address academic concerns, develop support plans, and navigate course-specific challenges or conflict. </li><li>Support the ongoing development of policies related to missed classes, attendance, tardiness, extensions, and academic integrity. </li></ul> <p>Admissions & Course Placement</p> <ul> <li>Review Upper School admissions files and participate in committee discussions and decisions. </li><li>Oversee academic placements, coordinating department input and diagnostic assessments. </li><li>Manage equitable and efficient course enrollment, including drop/add, independent studies, and overall course balancing. </li><li>Communicate with current and prospective families about course pathways, workload expectations, and the school's academic philosophy. </li></ul> <p>PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND LEADERSHIP STYLE</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree required;
