<p>Seasonal Highway Maintenance Worker (Snowbird)</p> <p>Hours:</p> <p>7:00am - 3:30pm</p> <p>Sign on bonus:</p> <p>$1,000</p> <p>$500 after 30 days of employment</p> <p>$500 at the end of employment on March 31, 2026</p> <p>Benefits: NONE</p> <p>General Description</p> <p>McHenry County Division of Transportation is seeking temporary road maintenance workers to work from mid-November until March 31, 2026. These positions perform a variety of maintenance and traffic tasks related to the preservation and upkeep of County highways, bridges, drainage structures, other highway features and DOT facilities. These positions perform semi-skilled work in operating tools and highway maintenance equipment and also perform essential snow and ice control operations with two schedule options to choose from.</p> <p>Options/Schedule:</p> <p>Option 1: Seasonal winter positions will work Monday through Friday from 7:00 am until 3:30 pm. This will also include after-hours overtime during snow and ice events which may include weekends and holidays.</p> <p>Option 2: On-call commitment for any and all snow events. Must have a flexible schedule and must be available to work at all hours for snow callouts. When called in, must report to work within one hour, which may include weekends and holidays.</p> <p>Essential Functions</p> <ul> <li>Operate snowplow trucks with plows and salt spreaders, tractors, chippers, compressors, jack hammers, generators, etc. </li><li>Wash, grease and assist in maintenance/servicing equipment including minor repairs and preventative maintenance. </li><li>Repair, replace and patch asphalt and fill in aggregate shoulder ruts. </li><li>Direct and control traffic during road maintenance. </li><li>Remove and dispose of trash, dead animals and other debris found on highways. </li><li>Trim and chip trees and shrubs. </li><li>Perform physical labor and work under extreme weather conditions. </li><li>All duties are performed in accordance with the County safety code and established safe work practices. </li><li>Performs other duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge Skills Abilities and Education Required</p> <ul> <li>Ability to follow directions </li><li>Effectively problem solve </li><li>Work well both individually and on a team </li><li>Ability to work long hours day or night </li><li>Strong communication skills </li><li>Some knowledge of road maintenance equipment, tools, and materials </li></ul> <p>Education and/or Other Requirements:</p> <ul> <li>Completion of a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) equivalent </li><li>Candidates must possess a CDL Class A or B license with no restrictions, an N(Tanker) endorsement is preferred. </li><li>Requires a satisfactory driving record </li></ul> <p>Must be able to successfully pass both a background screening and a pre-employment physical.</p> <p>McHenry County is an equal opportunity employer.
