<p>HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC I 61070</p> <p>(Non-Competitive)</p> <p>DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS</p> <p>The work involves responsibility for performing skilled mechanical repair work on heavy automotive and construction equipment, including hydraulic systems. Under supervision, an employee in this class performs skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work on heavy automotive and construction equipment that operate on gasoline drive power. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic I is differentiated from the second level in that the work performed is primarily on internal gasoline combustion system and not on unique operating systems as found in heavy bulldozers, power shovels, extractors and other heavy construction equipment. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed, giving latitude for planning the details of each assignment. Work is reviewed upon completion by thorough operation of the equipment. Does related work as required.</p> <p>TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES</p> <p>Performs skilled work in the repairing and overhauling of gas driven engines, transmissions, brake and exhaust systems, water pumps, generators, suspension systems, differentials and axles.</p> <p>Diagnoses cause of equipment malfunction or examines equipment to locate inoperative or malfunctioning components: tests units for conformance to specifications under actual or simulated operating conditions using equipment such as voltage testers and hydraulic testing equipment.</p> <p>Dismantles equipment using hoists, hand and power wrenches, screwdrivers and pliers and other mechanic's tools; inspects parts for damage or excessive wear and verifies that clearance and dimensions of parts such as shafts, bearings, bushings, pins, gears and rollers meet factory specifications, using gauges such as calipers and micrometers.</p> <p>Repairs and replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves and bearings using mechanics hand tools; rebuilds, repairs or replaces malfunctioning carburetors, generators, starters, etc.; cleans parts by hand using cleaning solutions.</p> <p>Tests repair equipment under actual or simulated operating conditions to insure malfunction has been corrected; attaches compression, ignition and timing instruments to engine and tunes engine to optimum operating conditions.</p> <p>Mounts and dismounts snow plow blades and other auxiliary equipment.</p> <p>Rebuild defective or damaged equipment subassemblies.</p> <p>Greases all moving parts, etc.</p> <p>When Assigned to Onondaga County Department of Transportation and Department of Drainage and Sanitation:</p> <p>Maintains and repairs less complex internal combustion engines found on construction equipment propelled by gasoline and/or diesel motors.</p> <p>Maintains and repairs internal combustion engines and related mechanisms on automobiles and pick-ups and similar light trucks.</p> <p>Maintains and repairs small gas powered engines typically found on chain saws, snow blowers, mowers and so on.</p> <p>May assist Heavy Equipment Mechanics II in the maintenance and repair of heavy construction equipment, inclusive of engines and operating assemblies, such as brakes, clutches and drive trains.</p> <p>May work on cars, light trucks, small gas engines and machines.</p> <p>When Assigned to Onondaga Community College:</p> <p>May operate vehicles for snow removal.</p> <p>FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS</p> <p>Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the mechanics trade as related to the repair and maintenance of heavy automotive or construction equipment.</p> <p>Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.</p> <p>Good knowledge of the operations of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines.</p> <p>Good knowledge of the electrical systems in heavy automotive and construction equipment.</p> <p>Skill in the use of tools, machines and testing equipment.</p> <p>Ability to diagnose troubles related to this type of equipment.</p> <p>Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instruction and read diagrams.</p> <p>Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.</p> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS</p> <ul> <li> <p>Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology or Diesel Equipment Technology; or,</p> </li><li> <p>Two (2) years of skilled mechanical experience or its part-time equivalent, in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, construction equipment or heavy trucks utilizing both gasoline and diesel powered engines; or,</p> </li><li> <p>An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).</p> </li></ul> <p>SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT</p> <p>At Time of Appointment:</p> <p>When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.</p> <p>Eligibility for and continued possession of the license is required for employment.</p> <p>Note: Additional endorsements or certifications may be required upon completion of the probationary period.</p> <p>10/2018 REVISED</p>
