A diverse, qualified, and engaged talent base is the key to our success.</p> <p>Summary</p> <p>The Welder Intern position is responsible for performing quality welding of parts and fixtures in the railcar manufacturing process. This position performs manual or semi-automatic welding processes to assemble parts or attach fixtures to a railcar using various equipment such as welding machines, torches and hand tools. This position will work as an intern under a qualified welder.</p> <p>Duties and Responsibilities</p> <p>To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform the following essential duties satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned to address business needs and changing business practices.</p> <ul> <li>Completes on site, on the job weld training school. </li><li>Fits, aligns and clamps railcar parts, usually in jigs and fixtures, to prepare for welding steel. </li><li>Cleans and preps surface area to be welded using a grinder or other hand tools designated for the job. </li><li>Performs manual or semi-automatic arc welding of railcar parts, sub-assemblies, and assemblies on a bench, floor, or assembly line. </li><li>Follows weld procedures outlined in Standard Operating Procedures by preheating work, maintaining heat and speed of travel to assure penetration and weld bead size, grinding work incidental welding, and removing slag. </li><li>Visually inspects welds, repairs defective welds, and performs minor repairs to welding equipment. </li><li>Performs occasional air, arc or flame cutting to repair defective welds. </li><li>Ensures that safety and housekeeping standards are met and maintained. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications</p> <p>The following generally describes requirements to successfully perform the assigned duties.</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Current enrollment in a participating high school with the Greenbrier Companies High School Internship program </li><li>Minimum 2.0 GPA at time of application and ability to maintain 2.0 GPA requirement throughout duration of the internship. </li><li>Ability and willingness to wear PPE including but not limited to hard hat, hearing protection, composite toe safety shoes, and any other PPE appropriate for the specific area the Production Assistant Intern may be working. </li><li>Ability to follow verbal and written instructions </li><li>Ability to work independently or with a team </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Experience using a manual or semi-automatic arc welder </li><li>Experience working in a production environment </li></ul> <p>Work Environment and Physical Requirements</p> <p>Work Environment</p> <p>The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
