<p>Description</p> <p>The City of Fremont's Maintenance Operations Department is recruiting for</p> <p>Fleet Mechanic I - Heavy Equipment</p> <p>VIEW THE JOB ANNOUNCEMENT</p> <p>The Department</p> <p>The mission of the Maintenance Operations Department is to enhance the community by providing high quality maintenance services through the maintenance of safe and effective transportation systems and public infrastructure that support a desirable quality of life for residents, businesses, and visitors, and to support the City organization with efficient and effective services for City buildings and fleet vehicles.</p> <p>The Ideal Candidate - Heavy Equipment</p> <p>The ideal candidate should possess a combination of technical skills, certifications, experience, and professional attributes suited to complete a full range of journey level mechanic work by performing preventative maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline, diesel, alternative fuel, hybrid and electric, heavy duty vehicles and equipment that includes but not limited to fire engines and pump systems, fire trucks including large trailer aerial ladder trucks, gang mowers, aerial work platforms, and construction equipment such as loaders, graders, dump trucks, back hoes, asphalt trucks, trailers, rollers, street sweepers, air compressors, and off road equipment.</p> <p>First Review of Applications</p> <p>The first review of applications is Friday, August 15, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. (PT). The Incumbents report to the Fleet Mechanic II. Assignments and objectives are set and established work processes are to be followed. Work review is occasional, during progress or upon completion of assignment, usually upon employee initiation or receipt of customer comment. It is distinguished from Fleet Mechanic I - Light Equipment by the latter's primary responsibility to maintain, repair, and overhaul light to medium duty vehicles and equipment.</p> <p>Essential Functions</p> <p>Heavy Equipment</p> <ul> <li>Completes service orders on assigned vehicles and equipment by performing preventative maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline, diesel, alternative fuel, hybrid and electric, heavy duty vehicles and equipment that includes but not limited to fire engines and pump systems, fire trucks including large trailer aerial ladder trucks, gang mowers, aerial work platforms, and construction equipment such as loaders, graders, dump trucks, back hoes, asphalt trucks, trailers, rollers, street sweepers, air compressors, off road equipment, and motorcycles. </li><li>Uses electronic engine analyzer and other diagnostic equipment to diagnose and troubleshoot problems in all systems. Removes, repairs and/or replaces vehicle or equipment including major engine mechanical components, electrical systems, electronic systems, cooling systems, air conditioning systems, emission systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, internal combustion gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas, and alternative fuel engines, hybrid powertrains, automatic and standard transmissions, clutches, drivelines, differentials, and miscellaneous internal and external vehicle parts. </li><li>Conducts diesel opacity checks for compliance with applicable laws. </li><li>Responds to requests for emergency road service. </li><li>Makes emergency repairs in the field. </li><li>Performs gas and electric welding, and metal fabrication. </li><li>Test drives heavy vehicles and equipment. </li><li>Repairs, rotates, and balances tires. </li><li>Ensures proper handling and disposing of hazardous materials and read and follow Material Safety Data Sheets. </li><li>Cleans work areas and related shop facilities. </li></ul> <p>Marginal Functions</p> <ul> <li>Other duties as assigned. </li><li>May occasionally be assigned to work on light and medium vehicles and equipment based on business/operational needs. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <p>Knowledge, Skills and Abilities</p> <p>Knowledge of: The principles and operation of internal combustion, diesel, CNG, and alternative fuel engines and hybrid powertrains; maintenance, repair, and overhaul requirements of heavy vehicles and equipment, such as fire engines and aerial ladder trucks, pump systems, gang mowers, aerial work platforms and construction equipment such as loaders, graders, dump trucks, back hoes, asphalt trucks, trailers, rollers, street sweepers, air compressors, and off road equipment; the principles and operations of centrifugal pumps, valves and piping used on fire engines; methods used to tune-up heavy vehicles; the repair of major engine components; the use of testing equipment such as an electronic engine analyzer, voltmeter, exhaust emission analyzer, and oscilloscope; heavy vehicle electrical principles and operations; electronic principles and operations; maintenance and repair of hydraulic systems, fuel systems, air brake systems, cooling systems and transmissions; blueprint reading and schematic concepts; preventative maintenance inspection methods; automotive diagnostic equipment; the method of operation of a variety of automotive vehicles and equipment; the assembly and operation of auxiliary equipment typically found in vehicles, trucks and construction equipment; vehicle code pertaining to lighting systems, emission control systems, and brake systems; the operation and use of gas and electric welding equipment; the methods used in metal fabrication; safe work practices and use of required safety equipment.</p> <p>Skill in: Operating diagnostic equipment; at operating and driving gasoline, diesel, CNG, alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles and equipment; uses equipment repair tools.</p> <p>Ability to: Maintain, repair, and overhaul a variety of automotive, construction and other heavy mechanical equipment such as fire engines and aerial ladder trucks, and pump systems, gang mowers, aerial work platforms and construction equipment such as loaders, graders, dump trucks, back hoes, asphalt trucks, trailers, rollers, street sweepers, air compressors, off road equipment; diagnose and troubleshoot electrical circuits, electronic circuits, fuel systems, emission systems, brakes, differentials, air systems, and hydraulic systems; remove, repair and replace major and minor engine component parts; overhaul internal combustion gasoline, diesel, CNG, alternative fuel, hybrid, and electric engines; use shop tools; make vehicle repair and adjustments; work safely in an automotive shop environment and willing and able to wear safety equipment, some of which may be uncomfortable to wear, and may be used for long periods of time as required; read and interpret repair manuals and automated databases; ability to log work in automated work order tracking systems; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with individuals from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds; to use sound judgment; to determine the best work methods and work sequences when making extensive and complex repairs. Incumbent regularly plans and improves repair procedures such as developing methods of mechanically and physically adapting or altering items to fit and mesh into systems for which the items was not specifically designed.</p> <p>Incumbents must possess the physical and mental capacity to work under the conditions described in this document and to perform the duties required by their assigned position.</p> <p>Education/Experience</p> <p>Any combination of education and/or experience which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform a satisfactory job would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: Graduation from high school and/or trade school or equivalent and two years progressively responsible journey level experience in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of heavy duty vehicles and construction equipment.</p> <p>Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements</p> <p>Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class B California Driver's License as a condition of successful completion of the probationary period.
