<p>Description and Functions</p> <p>Open Until Filled</p> <p>GENERAL DESCRIPTION:</p> <p>The Wyoming Department of Agriculture, Analytical Services Laboratory, is searching for a Laboratory Scientist II with a background in chemistry. This chemistry position is responsible for the analysis of meat, animal food, fertilizer, pesticide, hemp, forage and fuel testing. The laboratory performs a wide range of analytical techniques, from bench-top wet chemistry to highly complex instrumentation. The environmental laboratory is ISO/IEC 17025 accredited, operates a strong quality management system and uses standard analytical methods for testing. This Laboratory Scientist II will also be cross-trained in water chemistry testing.</p> <p>Human Resource Contact: Kelly Joppa / 307.777.6036 / kelly.joppa@wyo.gov</p> <p>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.</p> <ul> <li>Performs routine analyses of samples and non-routine analytical chemistry work on a variety of samples through specialized training. </li><li>Operates highly complex laboratory analyzers and performs manual tests following detailed instructions, using safe, good laboratory practice. </li><li>Follows standard analytical procedures while handling hazardous or infectious materials. </li><li>Develops, maintains, and revises laboratory documents or policies. </li><li>Develops new or revised test methods, standard operation procedures, and laboratory policies. </li><li>Works independently under minimal supervision. </li><li>Responds to requests for information from the public and departmental personnel. </li><li>Acts as a leader in the chemistry laboratory by helping staff prioritize samples, troubleshooting equipment and methods, managing supply inventory, and training staff. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications</p> <p>PREFERENCES:</p> <p>Preference may be given to the applicant with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related field with at least 2 years of experience working in a laboratory environment.</p> <p>KNOWLEDGE:</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of basic chemistry principles and theories. </li><li>Knowledge of laboratory research principles and recording of daily work activities. </li><li>Knowledge of highly technical electronic analyzers and basic analytical chemistry, including GC-MS, UHPLC or LC-MS. </li><li>Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System. </li><li>Knowledge of laboratory quality control assurance practices, ISO accreditation, safety and hazardous material control. </li><li>Knowledge of regulatory standards such as USDA FSIS Meat Standards and/or FDA Food Safety. </li><li>Knowledge and ability to think critically and accurately to process complex data. </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>Education:</p> <p>Bachelor's Degree (typically in Science)</p> <p>Experience:</p> <p>0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Scientist I</p> <p>OR</p> <p>Education & ExperienceSubstitution:</p> <p>4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Scientist I</p> <p>Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:</p> <p>None</p> <p>Necessary Special Requirements</p> <p>PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Works closely with hazardous chemicals and substances. </li><li>Must be able to stand for long periods. </li><li>Works with environmental samples. </li><li>Some tasks may be repetitive. </li><li>Occasional exposure to loud noises. </li></ul> <p>NOTES:</p> <ul> <li>FLSA: Exempt </li><li>The Department of Agriculture may use a video interview as a mandatory first step of our process.
