<p>Essential Duties</p> <ol> <li>Edits, writes, plans, schedules, and produces content (both in print and online) that serves to promote public recognition, awareness, and support of the school. 2. Screens and evaluates materials such as manuscripts, articles, news items, and stories for publication. 3. Writes articles, headlines, and captions; edits submitted text for grammar, accuracy, consistency, and style. 4. Exercises editorial judgment and discretion regarding story topic selection and handling of sensitive materials. 5. Plans, determines, and maintaines production schedule for the journal; oversees the editorial process, flow of publications, and style of submitted material. 6. Corresponds with authors confirming their commitment, expected length of articles, format and image requirements, and deadline for submission. 7. Contributes in staff meetings; schedules weekly check-in with the Editor and others to maintain timely production. 8. Originates ideas for articles, stories, and manuscripts for publication; approves use and style of graphics. 9. Formulates and establish policies, standards, schedules, and style of publication. 10. Supervises small staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 11. May perform other duties as assigned. </li></ol> <p>Required Education and Experience</p> <p>Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism or related field. For additional information on the background check requirements and process visit "Learn about background checks" under the Applicant Support Resources section of Careers on the It's Your Yale website.</p> <p>Position Focus:</p> <p>The Communications Writer is responsible for promoting public recognition, awareness, and support of the Yale School of Management (SOM) by conceiving and writing engaging profiles, news articles, and feature stories for the various digital and print publications of SOM. The Communications Writer collaborates closely with Communications colleagues, students, faculty, and a variety of school departments, programs, and centers to identify, plan, and produce stories that will serve to promote public recognition, awareness, and support of the school. This position reports to the Director of Editorial and Design.</p> <p>Help plan, create, and execute external written communications that capture the SOM's distinctive approach and community and promote the school's priority messages.</p> <p>Write news and feature stories about student activities, faculty projects, and alumni. Conceive, pitch, and execute compact new formats for written materials that effectively and efficiently highlight the school's message and activities on the web and in social media.</p> <p>Write profiles of students, faculty members, alumni, and other members of the community, telling their stories in ways that incorporate the school's critical messages, themes, and other priorities.</p> <p>Write engaging articles about events at the school. Attend school events and interview students, faculty, and staff to write about them.</p> <p>Regularly meet with and communicate with students, staff, and faculty members to identify stories that demonstrate the distinctiveness of the school's mission, community, and approach. Pitch ideas for stories that help promote the school to a variety of audiences, including prospective students, alumni, and the public at large.</p> <p>Plan, prioritize, and organize workload to meet deadlines and provide material for regular email newsletters and other outlets.</p> <p>As requested, write high-quality informative copy for print brochures and online media.</p> <p>Work closely and collaboratively with the rest of the communications department, including the editorial, video, marketing, and social media teams, to ensure that all communications consistently promote the school's message and advance its strategic initiatives.</p> <p>The following Essential Duties are generic in nature; the information contained in this Position Focus are most relevant to this position.</p> <p>Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:</p> <p>Familiarity with business, finance, economics, and/or social science terminology. Demonstrated ability to write about meetings, speaker events, and other live events under tight deadlines.
