<p>Job Details</p> <p>(SUBJECT TO BUDGET AVAILABILITY)</p> <p>POSITIONS:</p> <p>Individualized Education Services Program (IESP) Speech Improvement Itinerant Teachers (K - 12) (Number of positions to be determined)</p> <p>LOCATION:</p> <p>Itinerant Special Education Teacher positions. Assignments may include provision of service to preschool-age and school-age students and will be itinerant, where possible in contiguous districts, but in all cases, one borough only. This position will have a focus on provision of services to students with Individualized Education Services Plans (IESPs). Positions available in all boroughs. The positions report to the Special Education Office and are assigned primarily to nonpublic school settings, including private and religious schools, preschool programs, day cares and Head Start programs. Assignments subject to change, within the same borough, dependent on caseload and student enrollment.</p> <p>ELIGIBILITY:</p> <p>Currently appointed NYCPS Teacher of Speech Improvement OR New York State certification as:</p> <ul> <li>Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped (TSHH), or </li><li>Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) </li></ul> <p>TERM:</p> <p>One-year position (subject to renewal based on performance and need)</p> <p>SELECTION CRITERIA:</p> <ul> <li>Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate the following: </li><li>New York State Certification as Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped (TSSH) OR Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) </li><li>Experience evaluating early childhood speech and language development </li><li>Knowledge of developmental milestones for early childhood </li><li>Ability to effectively communicate with families, agencies and school personnel </li><li>Knowledge of the pre-school continuum of services, regulations of the NYSED Commissioner, regulations of the NYCPS Chancellor </li><li>Knowledge of due process rights </li></ul> <p>After interviewing applicants that meet the selection criteria above, the following applicants will be considered:</p> <ul> <li>Regularly appointed and tenured </li><li>Regularly appointed and not tenured </li><li>New applicants to the New York City Public Schools </li></ul> <p>DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <p>Under the supervision of the Special Education Office, IESP Speech Improvement Teachers will:</p> <ul> <li>Provide speech and language therapy services mandated on Individualized Education Services Plans (IESPs) or SPs in K-12 nonpublic, parochial, and charter school settings, or at NYCPS service sites. </li><li>Travel between multiple school sites within their assigned borough to deliver services. </li><li>Conduct formal and informal evaluations and write comprehensive speech-language reports to inform IESP development and reviews. </li><li>Collaborate with IESP teams, school-based staff, and families to support speech-language development across academic and home environments. </li><li>Consult with teachers and administrators to provide classroom strategies and tiered supports that promote student communication skills. </li><li>Participate in multidisciplinary conferences, IESP review meetings, and parent engagement sessions. </li><li>Serve as a resource to nonpublic schools and agencies regarding speech-language development and service delivery. </li><li>Maintain accurate Encounter Attendance and service logs in DOE systems. </li><li>Represent NYCPS at Due Process Hearings as needed. </li><li>Perform other duties as assigned by the IESP Unit or supervisory team. </li><li>Consult with school, agency, parent, IEP teams and all other stakeholders on tiered classroom/current setting supports. </li><li>Participate in multidisciplinary and parent conferences to discuss student progress and provide recommendations for service delivery in the least restrictive environment. </li><li>Collaborate on the development of quality IESPs for students (5th bullet) </li><li>Conduct outreach to parents/guardians with a focus on providing recommendations to enhance students' functional ability and continued development in both school and home. </li></ul> <p>SALARY:</p> <p>As per the UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement</p> <p>WORK SCHEDULE:</p> <p>As per the UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement</p> <p>APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:</p> <p>Send resume, cover letter, and borough(s) of preference to IESPUnitHiring@schools.nyc.gov no later than September 19, 2025.</p> <p>DOE Non-Discrimination Policy</p> <p>The Department of Education of the City of New York is an inclusive equal opportunity employer committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce and providing a work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment upon any legally protected status or protected characteristic, including but not limited to an individual's actual or perceived sex, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, or pregnancy.
