<p>General Description</p> <p>Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, and re-conditioning of automobiles and specialized heavy equipment such as, but not limited to, fire/rescue, sanitation vehicles and heavy construction equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fleet Services Supervisor.</p> <p>Essential Job Functions</p> <ul> <li>Inspects, diagnoses, and performs all phases of repair and reconditioning of diversified automotive equipment. </li><li>Inspects vehicles and equipment and performs routine maintenance and service to include; checking fuel, oil, other fluids, battery, tires, lights and cleanliness. </li><li>Assist in servicing small tolls used for lawn maintenance. </li><li>Performs routine maintenance and janitorial work in assigned area. </li><li>Performs preventive maintenance with special attention given to assuring the safety of vehicles and to eliminate premature equipment failure. </li><li>Performs installation and repair of emergency lighting systems, cameras, sirens, and other specialized equipment, including wiring and electrical system trouble-shooting. Performs welding and brazing as required. </li><li>Performs Installation and minor repair of communication radios. Performs trouble shooting of computerized engine control systems. </li><li>Maintains record of repairs, parts used and labor expended per work order. Performs emergency road service to equipment outside garage including being available off-hours in case of emergencies. </li><li>Provides guidance and assistance to customers as needed. </li><li>Performs monthly fuel tank inspections and assists in the ordering of fuel. Assists co-workers in more complex repair work. </li></ul> <p>(These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. Employees will be required to perform other related duties as assigned, including City-directed work assignments in the event of a declared emergency.)</p> <p>Knowledge/Skills/Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Basic entry level knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices associated with automobiles, fire/rescue, sanitation, law enforcement and other specialized vehicles and equipment. </li><li>Basic entry level knowledge of the principals and operation of gasoline and diesel-fueled internal combustion engines. </li><li>Basic entry level knowledge of automotive and emergency lighting electrical systems. </li><li>Basic entry level skill in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems. </li><li>Basic entry level skill in using computers for data entry. </li><li>Basic entry level ability to diagnose and trouble-shoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical problems associated with all types of equipment with an emphasis on light engine equipment, in a timely, cost-effective manner. </li><li>Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. </li><li>Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing. </li><li>Ability to provide own tools, as required. </li><li>Ability to use various types of computer software. </li><li>Ability to plan, organize and use mature judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions in accordance with established policy. </li><li>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. </li></ul> <p>Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications</p> <p>Education and Experience:</p> <ul> <li>High School Diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred. </li><li>One (1) year of work experience in the diagnoses, maintenance, and repair of automobiles, trucks, and construction equipment. </li></ul> <p>(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)</p> <ul> <li>Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver's license by date of hire. </li><li>May be required to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B. </li><li>May be required to obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s). </li></ul> <p>Emergency Response Responsibility</p> <p>Every City employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description.
