<p>Job Title: Emergency Department Technician</p> <p>Job Description</p> <p>This role supports a fast-paced emergency department by assisting with patient preparation, coordinating diagnostic and follow-up appointments, managing clinical information and documentation, and ensuring exam rooms and work areas remain organized and ready for use. The position offers the opportunity to gain significant hands-on experience in emergency and acute care settings while working closely with licensed clinical staff.</p> <p>Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li>Prepare patients and exam rooms for evaluations by gathering necessary information such as test results, equipment, and supplies. </li><li>Process requests for prescription refills in accordance with established practice protocols. </li><li>Collect specimens and send them to appropriate laboratories for testing following departmental procedures. </li><li>Promptly and accurately report and refer patients' concerns, symptoms, reactions, and changes (appropriate to age) to licensed clinic personnel. </li><li>Schedule, edit, and maintain patient appointments for new and returning patients using the scheduling system. </li><li>Schedule radiology appointments and coordinate with imaging services as needed. </li><li>Maintain clean, orderly, and well-stocked exam rooms, hallways, and work areas. </li><li>Inform patients of authorization requirements and collect payments for new and returning patients using the scheduling system. </li><li>Collect patient demographic and insurance information, enter data into clinical and administrative systems, and assign medical record numbers. </li><li>Verify that required authorizations and verifications are complete before patients see providers. </li><li>Assist with patient-to-physician messaging, ensuring messages are documented, routed, and addressed in a timely manner. </li><li>Adhere strictly to scope of practice by not transporting patients to and from the hospital, not providing direct care or diagnosing patients outside scope, not forcibly moving patients or intervening in security matters, and not performing any tasks beyond the defined emergency department technician scope. </li></ul> <p>Essential Skills</p> <ul> <li>Current Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential. </li><li>Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, preferably from the American Heart Association. </li><li>Experience in emergency or emergent care settings, such as working on an ambulance or in an emergency department. </li><li>Demonstrated ability to respond effectively in emergency situations while maintaining composure and prioritizing patient safety. </li><li>Proficiency or familiarity with electronic medical record systems, such as Epic. </li><li>Strong attention to detail when collecting patient information, entering data, and verifying authorizations. </li><li>Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with patients, families, and clinical staff, including timely escalation of patient concerns. </li><li>Capability to work within a defined scope of practice and follow established protocols and procedures. </li></ul> <p>Additional Skills & Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>American Heart Association BLS certification. </li><li>Hands-on experience providing support in emergency response or pre-hospital care environments. </li><li>CPR training and demonstrated competence in basic life support techniques. </li><li>Interest in developing a long-term career in medicine and gaining experience in a high-acuity, teaching-focused environment. </li><li>Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, including scheduling, data entry, and coordination of patient services. </li><li>Comfort working with diverse patient populations and a wide range of clinical conditions in an emergency setting. </li></ul> <p>Work Environment</p> <p>The role is based in a busy emergency department with approximately 75 beds, providing exposure to a high volume of diverse and complex cases. The department operates around the clock, and this position works on rotating shifts that may include days, swing shifts, and overnight (graveyard) shifts. The environment is fast-paced and highly collaborative, with close interaction among physicians, nurses, technicians, and other healthcare professionals in a teaching-focused setting. Team members regularly use electronic medical record systems such as Epic, scheduling platforms, and standard clinical equipment for specimen collection and patient preparation. The work requires frequent movement throughout exam rooms, hallways, and patient care areas, as well as maintaining clean and orderly clinical spaces.
