<p>Status: Part-time, non-exempt (approximately 6 hours/week)</p> <p>Reports to: Assistant Director of Teacher Education</p> <p>Supervises: None</p> <p>Dates of Engagement: July 15, 2025 - April 30, 2026; specific dates below</p> <p>The Artistic Director, Longy Side-by-Side, has a key role in Longy's Teacher Education department. They will work in close collaboration with the Assistant Director of Teacher Education, and the Side-by-Side faculty and staff. As a Longy staff member, this person will have the opportunity to contribute to the vibrant life of a music school committed to innovation and civic engagement.</p> <p>The Artistic Director will, in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Teacher Education, shape and carry out the short- and long-term vision for Longy's Side-by-Side program, overseeing all ensembles. They will work closely with the Side-by-Side Program Coordinator and Assistant Artistic director to brainstorm, problem-solve, evaluate, and set goals for the program. They will mentor and lead the graduate students who assist with Side-by-Side before and during rehearsals and concerts.</p> <p>RESPONSIBILITES:</p> <ul> <li>Provide direction to instructors and graduate student mentors regarding the goals set for rehearsals and sectionals. </li><li>Select repertoire with a focus on meeting K-12 students' developing personal and musical needs. </li><li>Conduct full ensemble and small group rehearsals as well as sectionals. </li><li>In coordination with the SBS team, lead development of rehearsal and concert plans for all SBS sessions. </li><li>Build and sustain deep collaboration between Longy's SBS program and other community and school programs. </li><li>Assist the Assistant Director of Teacher Education in evaluating the performance of Teaching Assistants and Master of Music in Music Education (MM/ME) students within the program. </li><li>Prepare the SBS ensembles for informal and formal concerts, informances, and outreach opportunities throughout the year. </li><li>In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Teacher Education, guide the philosophical underpinnings of the SBS program to support growth mindset, culturally responsive teaching, student agency, access, equity and inclusion. </li><li>Assist the SBS staff and faculty with recruitment of K-12 students into the SBS programming. </li><li>Where relevant, represent SBS within the various contexts of music education and music teacher education (i.e., conferences, journal articles, workshops). </li></ul> <p>SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS</p> <ul> <li>Extensive teaching experience in K-12 and/or community music programs. </li><li>Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of ages: K-12 students, graduate students, families, and community members. </li><li>Qualified candidates will possess an outstanding record as an educator. </li><li>Teaching record must display a deep understanding and implementation of culturally responsive pedagogy methods. </li><li>An advanced degree (MM) in conducting, a Master of Music Education, or demonstrated equivalent, is required. </li><li>Must be available on Saturdays when the program is held, as well as occasional evenings. </li></ul> <p>Expected dates of 2025-2026 sessions, rehearsals, and performances:</p> <p>FALL TERM</p> <p>SPRING TERM</p> <p>10/4</p> <p>SBS Initial Meeting</p> <p>1/31</p> <p>Spring Session - Rehearsal 1</p> <p>10/11</p> <p>Fall Session - Rehearsal 1</p> <p>2/7</p> <p>Spring Session - Rehearsal 2</p> <p>10/18</p> <p>Fall Session - Rehearsal 2</p> <p>2/28</p> <p>Spring Session - Rehearsal 3</p> <p>11/1</p> <p>Fall Session - Rehearsal 3</p> <p>3/7</p> <p>Spring Session - Rehearsal 4</p> <p>11/8</p> <p>Fall Session - Rehearsal 4</p> <p>3/21</p> <p>Spring Session - Rehearsal 5</p> <p>11/15</p> <p>Fall Session - Rehearsal 5</p> <p>3/28</p> <p>Spring Session - Rehearsal 6</p> <p>11/22</p> <p>Fall Session - Rehearsal 6</p> <p>4/4</p> <p>Spring Concert - Pickman Hall</p> <p>12/6</p> <p>Fall Session - Rehearsal 7</p> <p>12/13</p> <p>Informance - Pickman Hall</p> <p>Longy School of Music of Bard College is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, marital or veteran status, or age.
