<p>Job Description:</p> <p>Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a teaching-centered professional faculty position in Computer Science for the 2026-2027 academic year (beginning in August). Although this position is not tenure-track, it includes the potential for long-term employment through annual renewal.</p> <p>This position carries a total load of 26 credits per 10-month academic year, which will include teaching 22-24 credits (standard courses are 4 credits), and 2-4 credits of non-instructional load, consisting of academic advising and/or lab coordination. The total load for this position is 26 credits per academic year.</p> <p>Appointment will be at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor, depending on credentials.</p> <p>This position does not require research activities or scholarly publications.</p> <p>Professional faculty are welcome to be involved in the life of the department and college beyond their teaching. All faculty at Augustana are invited to engage in professional development and mentoring opportunities consistent with their needs throughout their appointment at the college.</p> <p>Our students are active outside of the classroom, and faculty are encouraged to connect with students in extracurricular settings, such as student organizations focusing on cybersecurity, video game design, web/software development, and a new "Girls Who Code" chapter on campus this year. Our department also hosts a weekly "department seminar", which includes student, faculty, and alumni presentations, outside speakers on special topics, interactive workshops, as well as fun social events.</p> <p>In short, the successful candidate will join a close-knit community of teacher-scholars who work collaboratively to educate the next generation of computer scientists. The successful applicant will enjoy teaching small classes where they get to know their students individually and can work closely with them to help them succeed.</p> <p>Requirements:</p> <p>What We're Looking For</p> <ul> <li> <p>A Master's Degree (or higher) in Computer Science or a closely-related field expected to be completed on or before August 2026.</p> </li><li> <p>Potential for teaching excellence, especially in small classroom settings where hands-on active learning is prioritized.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to teach introductory CS courses, as well as some upper-level CS courses and/or special topics courses in areas of the candidate's expertise.</p> </li><li> <p>Strong communication and organizational skills (to provide quality advising to our students)</p> </li><li> <p>Basic technical skills helpful for maintaining the departmental computer labs and other technology/equipment (while working collaboratively with the college-wide ITS department).</p> </li><li> <p>A commitment to supporting students from a range of cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.</p> </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Proficiency specifically with Java and/or Python (the languages used the most in our current curriculum) </li><li>Experience working with or administering both Windows and Linux-based systems. </li><li>Expertise in a high-growth area, such as A.I. or Data Science, could also be beneficial.
