<p>Job Description:</p> <p>Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by assisting faculty in the development, implementation, preparation and set-up of undergraduate teaching laboratories such as general biology (BI101 and BI102), human anatomy and physiology (BI215 and BI216), microbiology (BI220), cell biology (BI226), and genetics (BI303). The manager will supervise work-study students, coordinate ordering, and provide instruction for teaching laboratories as needed within the department.</p> <p>This is a faculty ranked position.</p> <p>Essential Functions</p> <ul> <li>Provides lead direction for the safe and efficient operation of the biology teaching laboratories, to include general biology (BI101 and BI102), human anatomy and physiology (BI215 and BI216), microbiology (BI220), cell biology (BI220), and genetics (BI303). These courses run approximately 15-18 lab sections each semester. Weekly setup includes the organization of display models, tissue slides, and animal materials (including live animals), as needed. </li><li>Cultures and maintains living materials for use in the biology teaching laboratories. Cares for animals and plants used in biology teaching laboratories. </li><li>Coordinates the inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, lab ware, and instruments essential to the operation of the biology teaching laboratories. </li><li>Coordinates the ordering with the College office manager. Establishes time and cost estimates (accountable for managing funds/budgets). Prepares quotations. </li><li>Teaches 8-12 contact hours per contract year of general biology, microbiology, cell biology, and/or possibly upper-level laboratories in the candidate's specialty. May serve as backup to teach lectures for faculty. </li><li>Provides direction and supervision to undergraduate laboratory assistants and work-study students. </li><li>Provides support and assistance related to facilities and equipment issues and repairs. Equipment maintenance to include autoclaves, centrifuges, tissue culture incubators, refrigerators, laminar flow hoods, and microscopes. </li><li>Develops and implements policies, procedures, and standards for lab operations to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory and compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and standards. Coordinates with the University Chemical Hygiene Officer. </li><li>Supports faculty with their undergraduate teaching laboratories and lecture demonstrations. </li><li>Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results. </li><li>Serves as a member of the Department of Biology. </li></ul> <p>Other Functions</p> <ul> <li>Assesses the performance of direct reports and provides frequent feedback to optimize their performance. </li><li>Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information. </li><li>Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner. </li><li>Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned. </li><li>Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software. </li><li>Speaks, reads, and writes in English. </li><li>Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device. </li><li>Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor. </li></ul> <p>Requirements:</p> <ul> <li>Master's degree in biology, or a related field. </li><li>Experience in laboratory preparation is preferred. </li><li>Strong analytical skills, outstanding organizational skills and superb attention to detail are a must. </li><li>Exhibit professionalism and collegiality. </li><li>Demonstrate honesty, sound judgment and ethical behavior. </li><li>Able to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines. </li><li>Outstanding verbal and written communication skills. </li><li>Ability to work in fast-paced environment. </li><li>Ability to relate effectively with all members of a diverse academic community. </li><li>Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook). Advanced Excel or database experience helpful (for inventory and other tasks); Knowledge of R is preferred. </li><li>Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 40 pounds; travel outdoors to various parts of the campus </li><li>Work some evening or weekend hours.
