It's a place where public service careers are supported by a strong sense of community and purpose - and where motivated professionals can grow, contribute, and be part of something meaningful.</p> <p>About the Position:</p> <p>The incumbent will be responsible for enforcing city and state ordinances governing the ownership and care of animals within the City of San Bernardino and contracting cities. Duties include investigating reports of animal cruelty and abandonment, patrolling assigned areas, and safely collecting and transporting animals to the City's Animal Shelter.</p> <p>This position requires regular interaction with the public and may involve responding to emergency situations. Work schedules may vary and will require availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.</p> <p>The Ideal Candidate:</p> <ul> <li>Customer Service Skills: Maintains a friendly, professional, and compassionate demeanor when interacting with the public. Effectively communicates and explains laws and regulations related to animal care and control. </li><li>Animal Handling Experience: Demonstrates the ability to safely and humanely handle animals of various sizes and temperaments. Proficient in the use of animal control equipment such as leashes, control sticks, animal traps, and cat tongs. Knowledge of safe and humane euthanasia methods is desirable. </li><li>Administrative Abilities: Possesses strong organizational skills, including record keeping, use of radio dispatch systems, issuing citations, and preparing clear and accurate reports. </li></ul> <p>Day in the life consists of: </p> <ul> <li>Patrols assigned areas in a City vehicle and respond to calls regarding stray, injured, or dangerous animals. </li><li>Capture and safely transport wild, stray, and unlicensed animals to the City Animal Shelter. </li><li>Investigate complaints related to nuisance, uncontrolled, diseased, or dangerous animals, including animal bites and quarantine cases. </li><li>Respond to reports of animal cruelty and neglect; inspect properties to ensure proper care, sanitation, and housing </li><li>Collaborate with other agencies such as the Police Department, CHP, Code Compliance, and local schools on animal-related issues </li><li>Educate the public on laws, regulations, and responsible animal care, and assist with filing complaints </li><li>Investigate reports of stolen animals and support enforcement of City and State ordinances </li></ul> <p>Click here to view the Animal Control Officer job description.</p> <p>High School diploma or G.E.D. AND One (1) year of experience in the care and handling of animals in a kennel, veterinary, or related field or six (6) months at, or equivalent to, the level of the Animal Shelter Attendant in the City of San Bernardino; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.</p> <p> </p> <p>Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:</p> <p>A valid California driver's license is required.</p> <p>PC 832 within one year of hire.</p> <p>Euthanasia Certificate preferred. </p> <p> Knowledge of and Skilled in: </p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of basic species and breed identification for domestic and wild animals </li><li>Understanding of animal behavior and common diseases, including rabies, distemper, parvo, and other zoonotic conditions </li><li>Ability to recognize symptoms of illness, injury, or aggressive behavior in animals </li><li>Skilled in humane animal handling techniques, including the safe capture of sick, injured, or aggressive animals </li><li>Experience using and maintaining animal control equipment such as traps, control poles, and other tools </li><li>Ability to assess situations and make sound decisions in high-pressure or emergency conditions </li><li>Knowledge of approved euthanasia methods and procedures </li></ul> <p>Physical Requirements and Work Environment:</p> <p>The employee frequently works in extreme outside weather conditions and on slippery and uneven surfaces. The employee is often exposed to dangerous, injured, or diseased animals. The employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions; fumes or airborne articles; toxic or caustic chemicals, and zoonotic and other communicable diseases. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud within confined areas. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to manipulate, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk, sit, talk, and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
