<p>The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety, security, physical, and mental wellbeing of the inmates; the safety of staff, visiting professionals, and members of the public. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.</p> <p>The essential functions listed below are those that represent the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.</p> <ul> <li>Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals. </li><li>Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed. </li><li>Trains correctional staff regarding facility rules, procedures, and specific post duties. </li><li>Mediates officer disputes. </li><li>Respond to Codes such as fights, fire, medical, suicides, and deaths. </li><li>Identifies needs and provides staff training. </li><li>Develops work schedules, keeps time and attendance records, and maintains key control. </li><li>Ensures inmate counts, inspection of tiers, housing units, and compound for breaches of security. </li><li>Supervises visiting activities and authorizes inmate movement. </li><li>Organizes and directs management of inmates in a living unit. </li><li>Resolves difficult or volatile inmate conflicts. </li><li>Provides input to support staff concerning inmates. </li><li>Performs related work as assigned. </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:</p> <ul> <li>Requires High School Diploma or GED equivalent. </li><li>Over two years and up to and including four years of related experience. </li></ul> <p>SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:</p> <ul> <li>South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Class 2 Certification. </li><li>South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Supervisory Training. </li><li>NCIC Certification. </li><li>CPR/First Aid Certification. </li><li>Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history. </li></ul> <p>All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment. Employment is contingent upon clearing both the drug screening and background investigation. Beaufort County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.</p>
