<p>The Newport Summer Learning Academy (SLA) will provide an in-person, 6 week literacy focused program intended to mitigate summer learning loss for Newport Public Schools rising 1st-4th grade students. SLA is part of the Reading Reaps Rewards (R3) Initiative which is a collective of summer programs across Newport that provide literacy skill building as part of their camps. SLA works in partnership with Newport Public Schools (NPS) to provide access to high-quality summer programming for students who need help making academic gains, multilingual students, and our differently-abled students.</p> <p>Program Facilitator:</p> <ul> <li>SLA Program Facilitators will plan and facilitate a variety of enrichment activities that build upon lessons and skill building done during the morning portion of the day. </li><li>Activities must be planned in coordination with SLA Teachers/EL Teachers and allow students opportunities for independent learning and hands-on experiences. </li><li>SLA Program Facilitators should feel comfortable with open ended activities and changing planned activities based on student interest and ability. </li><li>SLA Program Facilitators will also attend a weekly field trip (usually Fridays) and/or water play activities with their class. </li></ul> <p>This summer we will utilize Aquatic WILD and IXL curriculum to support the theme of the summer program. SLA Program Facilitators will be able to utilize this curriculum to develop their daily activity plans. Training will be provided on June 23, 2025.</p> <p>Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Applicants should have a degree in education or a related field and experience in youth development, behavior management, and in planning and facilitating high interest and developmentally appropriate lessons with school age students, preferably elementary age. </li><li>College students working toward a degree in elementary education and who have experience facilitating activities with elementary age children may be considered for SLA Facilitator. </li></ul> <p>Schedule:</p> <ul> <li>June: Program Training on June 23, 2025. Additional SLA specific Program Orientation and classroom set up to be scheduled during the week of June 30, 2025. </li><li>Program Weeks: 6 weeks - July 7th to August 15th, 2025 (please note we WILL be open on Victory Day on Aug 11) </li><li>SLA Program Facilitators will work approximately 22.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday </li><li>Mon-Thurs, approximately 11:30-3:30, 4 hrs/day and Friday camp day, approximately 8:30-3:30, 6.5 hrs. </li><li>10 hours of planning time (to be used as needed before and during SLA). Please note that planning time will be adjusted for SLA Program Facilitators who are also working in the morning as an SLA or EL Teacher. </li></ul>
