<p>SAFETY/SECURITY SENSITIVE DESIGNATION & JOB OBJECTIVE</p> <p>This position is designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol screening.</p> <p>JOB OBJECTIVE: To perform a variety of advanced journey level skilled/technical maintenance and major repair services on diesel and gasoline engines, components, electrical systems, and transmissions of City vehicles and heavy equipment; provides mechanical assistance to other employees; performs diagnostic testing.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES</p> <ul> <li>Analyzes and diagnoses major mechanical problems and malfunctions on all types of diesel and gasoline engines, heavy equipment, transmissions, final drives, track systems, differentials, and planetary systems in the field and service shop facility. </li><li>Rebuilds and replaces major assemblies and components such as diesel engines, automatic transmissions, air and hydraulic brake systems. </li><li>Performs major electrical work, including the repair and rebuilding of electronic brake systems, alternators, starters, air conditioning systems and the replacement of wiring harnesses. </li><li>Designs, fabricates, and welds additional equipment, such as racks, boxes, tanks, and beds on vehicles. </li><li>Troubleshoots and corrects major repair problems by the use of a variety of test equipment such as volt meters, amp meters, hydraulic flow-meters, heat indicators, computerized diagnostic equipment, computerized front end alignment equipment, and gauges. </li><li>Notifies Automotive Team Leader and supervisor of unusual repair problems which will require major repair and replacement parts. </li><li>Road tests all types of vehicles to diagnose problems and to check results of repair. </li><li>Provides technical information and training to Automotive Technicians I and Automotive Technician Assistant in performing preventive maintenance service, minor repairs, and the operation of various tools and equipment. </li><li>Requisitions and picks up vehicle and equipment parts from the parts storeroom to complete work assignments. </li><li>Updates work order status to reflect assets current condition and readiness. </li><li>Operates city vehicles in the performance of essential functions. </li></ul> <p>SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None</p> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through completion of high school or vocational-technical course in automotive mechanics and two (2) years experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance, malfunction diagnosis, and repair. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.</p> <p> ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: </p> <ul> <li>Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver's License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position and must possess a valid Arkansas Class B (Commercial Vehicle) Driver's License within ninety (90) days of employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position. </li><li>Must possess the tools required for this position by the Department of Fleet Services within thirty (30) days of employment and maintain required tools in working condition for the duration of employment in this position. </li></ul> <p>DISCLAIMER: </p> <p>This document does not create an employment contract, implied or otherwise.APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS</p> <ul> <li>Application and Supplemental Questions required by Closing Date (On-Line applications are preferred). </li><li>Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are required to take and pass thePractical exam. Qualified applicants will be notified of test time, date and location after the closing date. </li></ul> <p>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion diesel and gasoline fueled engines and related mechanical systems. </li><li>Knowledge of the major vehicle repair and maintenance procedures. </li><li>Knowledge of occupational hazard and safety precautions of automotive and construction equipment trades. </li><li>Skill in the care and use of hand and light power tools. </li><li>Skill in the use of special diagnostic and mechanical adjustment equipment. </li><li>Skill in the operation of automatic transmission automobiles. </li><li>Ability to note defects, damage, and wear in vehicle systems and automotive/equipment components. </li><li>Ability to diagnose vehicle malfunctions of all types. </li><li>Ability to keep accurate records and complete work orders. </li><li>Ability to read and write. </li><li>Ability to lift, push, pull or carry up to seventy-five (75) pounds or more in the performance of essential job functions. </li><li>Ability to withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions. </li><li>Ability to follow oral and written instructions. </li></ul> <p>PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS - REPRESENTATIVE OF THOSE REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB</p> <p>The physical demand characteristics and activities indicated below are representative of those that will be required to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
