Their primary responsibilities include mentoring, supervising, and tutoring the summer program participants. </li><li>Tutor Counselors must be available during into the night hours to supervise students, in addition to their assigned daytime duties. The residential schedule runs from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, and residential staff are not permitted to leave the campus while students are on campus. </li></ul> <p>Position Overview</p> <p>The Upward Bound Program at Rhode Island College is a federally funded program for rising 10, 11, and 12 grade college-bound high school students. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the high school graduation, college-going, and college graduation rates of program participants. Interested candidates should visit: https://www.ric.edu/department-directory/center-scholar-development/upward-bound for more information about the Upward Bound Program.</p> <p>This summer program seeks to cultivate a community that prioritizes academic excellence, personal growth, and student accountability. Participants reside in a dormitory at RIC, where they are supervised by the team of tutor counselors. Throughout the program, students take high school courses in literature and writing, mathematics, science, and SAT preparation. They will may also participate in introductory level courses in foreign languages, dance, and STEM courses. Beyond academic coursework, the program provides social, recreational, cultural, and field trip activities for students to engage in exploration.</p> <p>We seek dedicated individuals to serve as Tutor Counselors, providing mentorship, supervision, and academic support to high school participants in a dynamic residential program.</p> <p>Essential Duties</p> <ul> <li>Participate in orientation and training from June 16 to June 27, including evenings. </li><li>Supervise and mentor 7 to 10 students; support and uphold the Student Code of Conduct. </li><li>Promote the use of conflict-resolution strategies to tackle student issues. </li><li>Tutor approximately 30 to 40 students in 2 - 3 assigned subject areas. </li><li>Conduct weekly meetings with instructors to track student progress. </li><li>Organize and document tutoring sessions. </li><li>Maintain accurate tutoring session records. </li><li>Plan and execute diverse cultural and character-building activities </li><li>Attend regular staff meetings and individual advisor check-ins </li><li>Respond to routine and emergency situations as trained. </li><li>Perform other job-related duties as assigned. </li><li>Attend and participate in weekly on-on-one meetings with the resident manager. </li></ul> <p>Occasional Duties</p> <ul> <li>Directly supervise a group of students on field trips including NYC. </li></ul> <p>Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Maturity and responsible character to serve as a role model for students and team of tutor counselors. </li><li>Strong interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills. </li><li>Ability to work independently and collaboratively. </li></ul> <p>Required Qualifications</p> <p>Education:</p> <ul> <li>Full-time undergraduate student with at least 30 earned credits and a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 at the end of the fall 2023 semester. </li><li>Strong academic proficiency to tutor in one or more of the following high school subject areas: English, Mathematics, SAT Prep, Science, STEM, and Introductory Foreign Language classes (i.e., Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, German, Greek, etc.) </li></ul> <p>Experience:</p> <ul> <li>Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills </li><li>Experience in residence life, youth programs, mentoring, or tutoring </li><li>Ability to work with diverse adolescent populations. </li></ul> <p>Additional requirements/expectations:</p> <ul> <li>24/7 availability during program (Sunday afternoon through Friday evening) </li><li>On-campus residence, sharing a suite with 7- 10 high school students </li><li>No enrollment in summer classes during the employment period. </li><li>Adherence to all program, College, and State regulations. </li><li>Available through Saturday, August 9 for project completion. </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>At least one plus year of college housing experience. </li><li>Recent college graduates and post-graduate degree students. </li></ul> <p>Environmental Conditions</p> <p>The employee is not exposed to known adverse environmental conditions. Teaching instruction is performed in a traditional classroom setting, and the residential facility is one of the college dormitories. However, participation in planned cultural and social activities with students is expected.</p>
