Read the Job Announcement carefully for\nspecific filing instructions, supplemental questions, and final filing dates.\n</p> <p>GRADE</p> <p>ASTD12</p> <p>LOCATION OF POSITION</p> <p>\nOffice of the State\nFire Marshal\nNortheast Regional\nOffice\n2 S Bond Street,?\nBel Air MD 21014\n\n</p> <p>Main Purpose of Job</p> <p>The main purpose of this position is the enforcement of State laws in the field of fire\nprevention and fire inspection in order to preserve life and protect property from fire and\nother emergency conditions.</p> <p>POSITION DUTIES</p> <ul> <li>Enforce Maryland State Fire\nPrevention Code and various code requirements by conducting fire safety\ninspections of new and existing structures, and identifying occupancy classification,\ncomputing the allowable occupant load, inspecting the means of egress elements,\nverifying the type of construction for an addition or remodeling projects.\nConducting inspections of places of public assembly, such as bars and\nrestaurants, exhibition halls, commercial and mercantile buildings, hotels and\nmotels to ensure public safety. Has an extensive knowledge of the Maryland Fire\nPrevention code, and numerous national fire codes to ensure compliance of\nvarious occupancies for fire and life safety. Must have vast knowledge of\nbuilding construction types as well as fire protection features and equipment.\n• Learns to determine if\nfacilities meet the State Fire Prevention Code, and subsequently determine the\nappropriate timeframe required to complete any violations noted or if\nviolations are in negligence of State law, which may be due to complaints of\nvarious occupancies. Testify to the Maryland State Fire Prevention Commission\nat hearings where appeals are filed by those who are aggrieved by an order or\ndecision of the Office of the State Fire Marshal.?\n• Demonstrate and show\ncontinual proficiency in utilizing effective communications skills, which\ninclude (1) reading and comprehension skills, (2) verbal skills, (i.e.\nreceiving, comprehending and responding verbally to communications) and (3)\nwriting skills, effectively completing various forms, which include detailed\nreports and fire safety inspection documents. Learns to independently conduct\ninspections and prepare for future inspections or appeals.\n• Other duties as\nassigned.\n </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>Education:?? Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.\nExperience: None. \nNotes:\n1. Candidates may substitute experience inspecting buildings and other places of public assembly for compliance with fire prevention and safety laws, codes and regulations on a year-for-year basis for the required education.\n2.?Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military?service experience as a non-commissioned officer in?Firefighter?classifications or Firefighter specialty codes in the fire inspection field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.\n</p> <p>DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications:\n1. Experience performing fire\nsafety inspections in buildings with multiple uses.\n2. Fire Safety Inspector\ncertification\n</p> <p>LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS</p> <p>Employees in this\nclassification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor\nvehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor\nvehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.\n</p> <p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>1.\nEmployees in this classification are assigned duties in a given service area of\nthe State.\n2.\nCandidates for positions in this classification will be subject to an initial\ndrug screening, a physical examination and a complete criminal background\ninvestigation before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction\nrecord may be grounds for rejection of the candidate.\n3.\nEmployees in this classification must successfully meet the standards\nestablished by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 1031) for Fire\nSafety Inspector I prior to completion of the probationary period.\n\n\n4.\nEmployees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in\naccordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use\nof Drugs.\n</p> <p>SELECTION PROCESS</p> <p>Only candidates who meet the\nminimum qualifications will be considered for this classification. Therefore,\nit is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your\napplication. Successful candidates will be placed on the Eligible List\ncategorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED OR QUALIFIED and remain\neligible for consideration for at least one year from the date of examination.\nThe list will be used by the hiring manager to select employees.\n</p> <p>EXAMINATION PROCESS</p> <p>The examination will consist\nof a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements\nof the position.
