<p>Heritage Grocers Group is a leading Hispanic grocer based in Ontario, California with 115 stores, in 6 states under the banners of Cardenas Markets (CA, NV & AZ), El Rancho Supermercado (TX & KS) and Tony's Fresh Market (IL). Through its Heritage Grocers Giving Foundation, they are committed to supporting its customers' health and financial wellbeing with a robust offering of fresh produce, competitive pricing and an orientation toward being an active community partner. The Foundation is recruiting a results-oriented, graduate-level student for a three-month internship working towards expanding the company's effort to improve access to fresh fruits and vegetables for low-income communities. This internship is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of public health, food systems and business.</p> <p>POSITION SUMMARY:</p> <p>The intern will play a key role in developing partnerships with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and other primary care providers serving low-income populations across California and Nevada (with an opportunity to explore other relationships in other states where Heritage Grocers operates, such as Texas and/or Illinois). The goal is to design and implement innovative strategies that increase the consumption of fresh produce by health impacted individuals / patients through community-based initiatives, financial incentives, and health education.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <p>The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:</p> <ul> <li>Identify and build partnerships with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and community serving organizations that focus on improving health outcomes through nutrition </li><li>Plan, execute and fund models to engage health impacted individuals / patients in purchasing and consuming fresh produce </li><li>Conduct research on state and federal funding opportunities that could subsidize the cost of fruits and vegetables </li><li>Create evaluation tools and define metrics to measure program effectiveness </li><li>Assist in planning community engagement events or pilots at participating health centers </li><li>Prepare reports, presentations, and briefings for internal stakeholders </li></ul> <p>SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Currently enrolled in a graduate program in public health or business </li><li>Results orientation and comfort building new partnerships across sectors </li><li>Familiarity with the social determinants of health and the role of FQHCs in community wellness </li><li>Strong research, communication, and organizational skills </li><li>Demonstrated interest in food access, health equity, and mission aligned businesses </li><li>Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities </li><li>Spanish proficiency preferred </li></ul> <p>WHAT YOU'LL GAIN:</p> <ul> <li>Direct experience designing and implementing programs that may have a double bottom line impact of improving health and revenue </li><li>Exposure to community health systems and produce retail operations </li><li>Opportunity to present your work to the company's CEO and Executive Leadership Team in January 2026 </li><li>Professional development in cross-sector collaboration and strategic program design </li></ul> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK CONDITIONS:</p> <p>The physical demands and work conditions below represent those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
