We're focused on building a team that values excellence, making a meaningful impact on our schools and community.</p> <p>POSITION DESCRIPTION:</p> <ul> <li>The Intermediate School English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher will provide high-quality literacy instruction to students in 5th and 6th grades using evidence-based practices aligned with the Tennessee Academic Standards and the Science of Reading. The teacher will foster reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary development, writing proficiency, and a lifelong love of literature. This role includes creating a welcoming, culturally responsive classroom environment and partnering with colleagues to ensure student success across all content areas. </li></ul> <p>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Deliver rigorous, standard-aligned ELA instruction to support all domains of literacy (reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language).</p> </li><li> <p>Use structured literacy and foundational skills instruction grounded in the Science of Reading.</p> </li><li> <p>Develop and implement district adopted high quality instructional materials that address individual student needs and promote mastery of the Tennessee ELA Standards.</p> </li><li> <p>Employ formative and summative assessments to measure student growth and guide instruction.</p> </li><li> <p>Differentiate instruction for diverse learners, including students receiving Tier II/III RTI support, students with IEPs/504s, English Learners, and advanced learners.</p> </li><li> <p>Incorporate culturally relevant texts and student voice in the curriculum.</p> </li><li> <p>Create a classroom environment that fosters curiosity, student agency, academic discussion, and mutual respect.</p> </li><li> <p>Collaborate with grade-level teams, interventionists, and instructional coaches to analyze data and align instructional strategies.</p> </li><li> <p>Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), faculty meetings, district-wide PD, and ongoing coaching.</p> </li><li> <p>Use district-supported digital tools and platforms (e.g., Google Workspace, LMS, reading diagnostics) to enhance instruction and communication.</p> </li><li> <p>Maintain accurate student records, prepare progress reports, and communicate with families about student progress.</p> </li><li> <p>Uphold district expectations related to behavior, classroom management, and the use of restorative practices.</p> </li></ul> <p>QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, English, Literacy, or a related field (Master's preferred).</p> </li><li> <p>Valid Tennessee Teaching License with appropriate endorsement for English Language Arts (K-5 endorsement qualifies; 6-12 or 7-12 English endorsement qualifies)</p> </li><li> <p>Knowledge of Tennessee ELA Academic Standards and best practices in literacy instruction.</p> </li><li> <p>Experience or training in Science of Reading, structured literacy, and universal screeners and progress monitoring tools (e.g., AimsWeb, Acadience).</p> </li><li> <p>Commitment to ongoing professional growth and the FSD mission of inclusive excellence.</p> </li><li> <p>Previous successful teaching experience in upper elementary or middle grades preferred.</p> </li></ul> <p>DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Ability to work as a team member in a dynamic, complex environment and organize time and workload effectively</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all levels of staff and vendors</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and vendors</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to effectively perform job duties with minimum supervision</p> </li><li> <p>Demonstrated problem solving and time management abilities</p> </li></ul> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Frequent sitting and standing; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling and twisting</p> </li><li> <p>Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching</p> </li><li> <p>Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional physical restraint of students to control behavior (only after training completed)</p> </li><li> <p>May work prolonged or irregular hours; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold and inclement weather), exposure to noise</p> </li><li> <p>Work with frequent interruptions</p> </li></ul> <p>Application Procedure:</p> <p>Apply online</p> <p>Franklin Special School District Pay Scale</p> <p>Equal Opportunity Employer Statement</p> <p>Franklin Special District (FSD) is an equal opportunity employer committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and respectful workplace.
