Join us and make a meaningful impact!</p> <p>Essential Job Functions:</p> <p>The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.</p> <ul> <li>Performs general maintenance, repair work and basic operational tasks on water and/or wastewater facilities, systems, equipment, vehicles and grounds, including the following: </li><li>Water Distribution: locating utility lines, repairing breaks in water mains, repairing or replacing service lines, servicing or replacing fire hydrants; flushing water system testing, installing and replacing meters, repairing or replacing valves and valve boxes, inspecting and repairing meter pits, testing water pressure and flow, testing and repairing backflow devices, collecting chlorine and iron samples. </li><li>Water Treatment: installing, repairing and maintaining motors and pumps, acidizing iron filters, cleaning softeners, salt pits and plumbing lines, cleaning and repairing wells, performing maintenance on chlorine and fluoride equipment and manual and automatic valves and pipes, fitting pipes and welding system components, running basic tests, turning pumps on and off and responding to alarms. </li><li>Wastewater Collection. Inspect, clean, televise, locate, and repair sewer lines throughout the collections system. Perform confined space entries into valve pits and manholes as necessary to complete a task. Hydro-excavate trenches, maintain dewatering, mowing, and clearing easements, operating a high-pressure jet truck and root cutter to clear sewer lines of obstructions. Conduct Sonar pipe testing using SL Rat and log all activities into our work order system. Maintains records of work activities and inventory of equipment, tools, and supplies. </li><li>Wastewater Treatment: Inspects, tests and monitors machinery, equipment, tools, and parts for proper operation; makes adjustments, repairs or replacements as appropriate; cleans, lubricates and calibrates tools and equipment, reports malfunctioning or unsafe equipment; assists in developing and implementing preventive maintenance plans. </li><li>Perform various unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work and operates a variety of tools and equipment in the operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of city utility systems and facilities. </li><li>Ensure proper maintenance of vehicles, equipment and tools by cleaning and checking after use. </li><li>Reports defects or needed repairs to supervisor as necessary. </li><li>Assist in the installation and operation of temporary traffic control measures. </li><li>Perform all duties in conformance with appropriate safety standards, including: confined space, trenching and shoring and lock-out, tag-out. </li><li>Responds to 24-hour call for emergency situations; may be required to make initial assessment and respond accordingly. </li><li>Transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects. </li><li>Provides information necessary to maintain City's Geographic Information System (GIS) function. </li><li>Maintains records of work activities and inventory of equipment, tools and supplies. </li><li>Assist Operators with daily tasks associated with their assignments. </li><li>Assists with various plumbing, electrical, mechanical and carpentry projects for other City departments. </li><li>Performs other related duties as required. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:</p> <ul> <li>Ability to review, evaluate and record data. </li><li>Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions. </li><li>Ability to operate within established guidelines. </li><li>Ability to exercise discretion in analyzing and selecting from alternative courses of action. </li><li>Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor, co-workers and general public. </li><li>Ability to perform basic mathematical equations. </li><li>Ability to utilize a variety of machinery, tools and equipment associated with utilities construction, maintenance and repair activities, which include dump truck, forklift, front loader, tractor, mower, weed eater, power tools, hand tools, gas monitoring equipment, semi-trailer, vacuum truck, mini excavator, crane, grader, tapping machine, rodding machine, easement cleaner, hydraulic saw, gas saw, chain saw, jackhammer, chipper, gas monitoring equipment, pumps, air compressor, paint machine, hydraulic valve exerciser, line locator, lid locator, well cleaning equipment, video camera equipment, various diagnostic instruments, welding equipment, pipe snapper. </li><li>Ability to operate a motor vehicle to conduct work activities. </li><li>Ability to respond to 24-hour call. </li><li>Ability to exert heavy to extremely heavy physical effort, on a regular, and at times sustained, basis, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials weighing 20-50 pounds; may occasionally involve objects and materials up to 100 pounds. </li><li>Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, fumes, moisture, humidity, rain, snow, severe weather, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, excavations, toxic agents, disease or pathogenic substances. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:</p> <ul> <li>High school diploma or GED, supplemented by vocational, technical or on-the-job training in water, wastewater, mechanical and/or electrical maintenance and repair. </li><li>One (1) to two (2) years experience involving utilities construction, maintenance and repair, mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair or heavy equipment operation. </li><li>Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position. </li><li>Must be able to work between the hours of 3:00pm -11:00 pm (schedule may fluctuate as necessary). </li><li>Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana driver's license; CDL and appropriate endorsements may be required. </li></ul> <p>The City of Carmel, Indiana, is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
