<p>Position Type:</p> <p>Adult Education/School Counselor</p> <p>Date Posted:</p> <p>7/15/2025</p> <p>Location:</p> <p>Adult Education</p> <p>  Additional Information: Show/Hide</p> <p>Description:</p> <p>Adult Education School and Career Counselor</p> <p>General Description</p> <p>The Adult Education School and Career Counselor provides comprehensive academic, career, and personal counseling services to adult learners enrolled in high school completion and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. This position supports student success by addressing personal, family, and educational barriers to achievement and guiding learners on their academic and career pathways.</p> <p>The position is fully in person and the ideal candidate would have a flexible schedule to work some mornings and evenings, up to 19 hours per week.</p> <p>Supervision Received</p> <p>Reports directly to the Director of Adult Education.</p> <p>Essential Duties and Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li>Foster an environment that promotes positive social interactions and conflict-resolution skills. </li><li>Encourage learners to respectfully question ideas and take intellectual risks. </li><li>Guide students in setting academic, career, and personal development goals. </li><li>Work with students to resolve personal, school, and family issues that may impact academic performance. </li><li>Review transcripts and academic records; advise students on educational options and program placement. </li><li>Make recommendations and referrals to appropriate school, community, and state resources. </li><li>Assist in maintaining accurate and complete student records, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws. </li><li>Disseminate information and provide counseling related to occupational and career planning. </li><li>Coordinate and facilitate career exploration activities and events for adult learners. </li><li>Support accurate data entry and maintain attention to detail in all recordkeeping. </li><li>Proctor computer based testing for students. </li><li>Attend monthly CT State Dept. of Education (CSDE) Career Navigator Meetings and monthly CSDE School Counselor Meetings </li></ul> <p>Additional Duties</p> <ul> <li>Assist in recruiting and enrolling eligible students into appropriate Adult Education programs. </li><li>Conduct group and individual counseling sessions on topics such as college access, financial aid, scholarship searches, and financial literacy. </li><li>Provide personal and family counseling as appropriate. </li><li>Collaborate with Adult Education Center staff to determine student needs and develop individualized success plans. </li><li>Serve as a liaison between students, staff, and the Adult Education Director. </li><li>Work in partnership with Wallingford Public Schools counseling staff. </li><li>Review and interpret educational documents, including transcripts, IEPs, 504 plans, and standardized test results. </li><li>Mediate and help resolve conflicts between students and between students and staff. </li><li>Collaborate with local and state agencies to provide wraparound services and resource access. </li><li>Attend state and regional meetings and trainings as needed. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications / Certifications</p> <ul> <li>Valid Connecticut Certification as a School Counselor (068) is required. </li><li>Minimum three years of school counseling experience preferred. </li><li>Proven ability to work with diverse adult learners including those in ESL, GED, ABE, NEDP, and CDP programs. </li><li>Knowledge of College and Career Readiness Standards and adult education database LACES preferred. </li><li>Knowledge of state and federal education laws and policies. </li><li>Considerable knowledge of the social, emotional, and cultural factors that influence adult learning. </li><li>Understanding of learning disabilities and how they affect academic progress. </li><li>Demonstrated ability to establish and foster strong working relationships with students and colleagues. </li></ul> <p>Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Excellent oral and written communication skills. </li><li>Excellent active listening and interpersonal skills. </li><li>Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. </li><li>Knowledge of Google Suite </li><li>Good data entry skills and attention to detail. </li><li>Considerable knowledge of confidentiality policies and proper maintenance of student records. </li><li>Ability to analyze and interpret a variety of student data to support decision-making. </li><li>Capacity to work collaboratively with colleagues, families, and community partners. </li><li>Commitment to equity, access, and student empowerment. </li></ul> <p>Physical and Mental Demands / Work Environment</p> <ul> <li>Frequent use of hands for typing, writing, and using office equipment. </li><li>Ability to sit, stand, walk, read, hear, see, speak, and perform physical tasks including reaching, kneeling, and crouching. </li><li>Occasional lifting or moving of items up to 20 pounds. </li><li>Frequent interruptions from staff, students, and visitors. </li><li>Regular evening hours required to meet the needs of adult learners. </li></ul> <p>We are an EOE</p>
