<p>DESCRIPTION</p> <p>P.O.S.T. CERTIFIED POLICE OFFICER APPLICANTS WILL BE HIRED AS POLICE OFFICERS WITH A STARTING SALARY BASED ON EXPERIENCE.</p> <p>This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.</p> <p>The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety of citizens and property by preventing, reporting, investigating, and analyzing crime within the city limits.</p> <p>EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES</p> <p>EssentialFunctions:</p> <ul> <li>Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business. </li><li>Patrolsassigned zone and interacts with citizens. </li><li>Responds tocall for service. </li><li>Prevents, detects, and investigates criminal activity. </li><li>Enforcesstate and federal laws, city ordinances, and issues citations. </li><li>Assists other officers in active investigations. </li><li>Investigatescrashandcrimescenes,documentcalls,filesreports,andpreparescasefilesforjudicialproceedings. </li><li>Interviews victims, witnesses,and suspects. </li><li>Issues search warrants and conducts searches of persons and property. </li><li>Preparescourt cases, communicates with district attorney's office, and appears in court to testify. </li><li>Inspectsand maintains assigned equipment. </li><li>Attendstraining sessions. </li><li>Provides security at community events. </li><li>Readsandunderstandstechnicalinstructions,proceduresmanualsandchartstosolvepracticalproblems,and methods and proceduresfor investigations and indrawing and layout work; composes routinereportsandspecializedreports,forms,andbusinessletters,withproperformat;speakscompoundsentencesusingnormalgrammarand wordform. </li><li>Understandsand validlyenforces federal and state laws and local ordinances while exercising good judgment and reasonable discretion. </li><li>Possessthetemperamentandgoodjudgmenttoeffectivelyanddiplomaticallydealwithallmembersofthepublic, including those who are irate and unreasonable. </li><li>Performs other work as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Additional Essential Functions for Canine Trainer:</p> <ul> <li>Is currently a certified trainer or certifying official with a nationally recognized canine training association. </li><li>Background in law enforcement canine training techniques, such as obedience training, patrol work, non-aggressive tracking, narcotic detection, explosive detections, and cadaver detection. </li><li>Participates in the selection and training of a canine. Establishes and attends formal training as necessary to prepare the canine for duty. </li><li>Hosts and instructs weekly training for all Murfreesboro canine teams and other department members as needed. </li><li>Creates and maintains all training records for Murfreesboro Police Department canine teams. </li><li>Maintain yearly certification for each canine team discipline through a nationally recognized canine training association. </li><li>Maintains records on K9 use including, but not limited to, training, certification(s), and deployments. </li><li>Coordinates veterinarian care, immunizations, routine care, and other required for canines. </li><li>Serves as the liaison on allmatters pertaining to the K9 unit. </li><li>Provides guidance and professional development to canine handlers. </li><li>Maintains and oversees the care and maintenance of training equipment. </li><li>Completes and disseminates statistical reports as assigned. </li><li>Ensures all canine handlers complete the proper documentation regarding canine use. </li><li>Establish positive relationships within Murfreesboro Police canine teams. </li><li>Law Enforcement Duties: An emphasis on understanding current Fourth Amendment updates, law enforcement canine TCA updates, and court rulings that may affect the canine program. </li><li>Develop partnerships with other law enforcement agencies for additional training opportunities. </li></ul> <p>Additional Essential Functions for School Resource Officers:</p> <ul> <li>Coordinate Safety Measures: Collaborate with school administrators to develop and implement safety protocols, emergency response plans, and crisis management procedures. Provide assistance, advice, and guidance in the development of threat assessments and safety plans. </li><li>Regularly patrol school campuses to deter criminal activity, address safety concerns, and maintain a visible police presence. Promote and facilitate school environments that are safe from crime and disorder. </li><li>Respond to incidents within schools, including threats, and other safety-related issues. </li><li>Build Relationships: Establish positive relationships with students, teachers, parents, and community members. Mentor, counsel, advise, and support students, parents, teachers, and school administrators as necessary and appropriate. </li><li>Educational Programs: Facilitate educational programs on topics such as alcohol or drug prevention, cyber safety, conflict resolution, or other similar programs. Provide training/presentations to administrators, staff, teachers, counselors, interventionists, parent groups, and community groups on a wide variety of "safe school" related topics. </li><li>Attend School Events: Participate in school events, assemblies, and parent-teacher meetings to engage with the school community. Perform school resource officer duties and responsibilities at after-hours events and other school-related functions. </li><li>Law Enforcement Duties: An emphasis on understanding current juvenile laws and court rulings that may affect the school systems and juvenile offenders. </li><li>Serve as a Role Model: Mentor students, promote positive behavior, and encourage academic success. </li><li>Work with School Staff: Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and administrators to address behavioral issues and provide support to students. Work with MCS Administration to promote the use of School system code of conduct for disciplinary issues. </li><li>Liaise with Parents: Communicate with parents regarding safety concerns, incidents, and student well-being. </li><li>Coordinate with Other Agencies: Make appropriate student referrals to outside service agencies as needed. Partner with social services, mental health professionals, and other agencies to support students' needs. </li></ul> <p>Physical andSensory Demands:</p> <ul> <li>Possess the physical ability to run and the strength to apprehend law violators. </li><li>Sits,stands,bends,stoops,reaches,pushes,andpulls,frequentlyliftsobjectsandpersons,climbstairs,walks,and runs intermittently. </li><li>Applicants must pass a physical agility test that consists of job-related bodily condition, muscular strength, agility, and physical coordination. The test consists of various elements such as running, pushing/pulling and carrying of weight, and climbing stairs. </li><li>Operatelawenforcementequipmentincluding,butnotlimitedto,policevehicleswithallemergencyequipment,mobileradios,hand-heldradios,recorders,fingerprintequipment,cameras,videocamera,copymachine,facsimilemachine,personalcomputerandperipheralequipment,radarequipment,andbothlethal and non-lethal weapons such as pistols, rifles, shotguns, ASP batons and OC spray. </li><li>Involvesroutine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals; explosives; violence; bloodborne pathogens. </li><li>Involvesbeingexposed to all types of weather conditions, some of which will beinclement. </li><li>Work will involve exposure to dangerous conditions andsituations and frequent exposure to violence. </li></ul> <p>TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>Minimum Education andExperience Requirements:</p> <ul> <li>RequiresHigh School diploma or GED equivalent. </li><li>Requires a certification as a Police Officer. </li><li>MustbeacitizenoftheUnitedStatesofAmericaorapermanentlegalresidentoftheUnitedStateswho isanhonorablydischargedveteranoftheUnitedStatesarmedforces.AsrequiredbyT.C.A.§38-8-105(d),anofficerwhoispermanentlegalresidentasoftheofficer'semploymentstartdatemustapplyfororobtain </li></ul> <p>U.S.citizenshipwithinsixyearsoftheofficer'semploymentstartdate;failuretoobtainU.S.citizenshipwithinsix(6)yearsoftheofficer'semploymentstartdateshallconstitutegroundsforterminationoftheofficer's employment.</p> <ul> <li>Must meet minimum visualrequirementof20/30 eacheye corrected and have enough visual acuitytoact to protect self and othersinemergency situations uncorrected. </li><li>Meetalllawful qualifications establishedby Tennessee law tobe certified by theTennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission("P.O.S.T."),T.C.A.
