<p>Under general direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, the 3208 Pool Lifeguard is responsible for the health and safety of students and pool users, and enforcement of rules/regulations at a District-operated swimming pool. Responsibilities include maintaining safe and healthy environment in and around the swimming pool; recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies; conducting rescue operations and provide emergency care and administer CPR and First Aid as required; communicate with PE classes students, pool users, and faculty/staff about pool rules/regulations; cleaning and disinfecting the pool, decks and aquatic equipment; monitor showers and locker rooms as needed; prepare the pool for various PE classes and other programs; and performing related duties as required. Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: sufficient strength and coordination to rescue submerged victims and remove them from the water without the use of a ladder or stairs.</p> <p>Part-time as needed employees are expected to make themselves available for on-call, early morning opening shifts, weekends, and closing evening shifts. Please note, successful candidates are NOT guaranteed specific fixed hours.</p> <p>Job Duties</p> <ol> <li> <p>Patrol and monitor pool activities, students and swimmers to prevent accidents; identify pool users in distress or those in danger.</p> </li><li> <p>Respond and conduct rescue operations, perform lifesaving techniques; assist swimmers in distress and rescue swimmers in danger; provide emergency care and perform CPR/AED and First Aid as required; call for EMS for emergency assistance.</p> </li><li> <p>Support Aquatics Coordinator and PE instructors in aquatic classes and other aquatic activities to diverse age groups.</p> </li><li> <p>Support swimming teams or other aquatic/sporting activities.</p> </li><li> <p>Communicate and provide students, faculty, staff and patrons with information and pool policies; caution swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforce pool rules and regulations; maintain order in and around the pool.</p> </li><li> <p>Maintain aquatic facility by inspecting and observing the pool area, and deck for safety and cleanliness; perform general pool facility maintenance duties including cleaning and disinfecting pool, deck and aquatic equipment used for aquatic programs.</p> </li><li> <p>Prepare incidents and accident reports; report facility maintenance issues.</p> </li><li> <p>Prepare the pool for various aquatic programs, i.e.: lane lines, exercise equipment and floatation devices.</p> </li><li> <p>Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times; maintain a high degree of customer services; maintain fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance).</p> </li><li> <p>Perform other duties as assigned.</p> </li></ol> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <p>Certifications must be kept current throughout the length of employment. Failure to demonstrate/show proof of current/valid certification may result in termination of employment.</p> <p>Experience: Two hundred (200) hours of experience as a paid or volunteer lifeguard.</p> <p>License and Certification:</p> <p>Current possession and maintenance of the following certification or the equivalent of:</p> <ol> <li> <p>Lifeguarding issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certified issuing agency.</p> </li><li> <p>CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certified issuing agency.</p> </li><li> <p>Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certified issuing agency; and</p> </li><li> <p>Title 22 - First Aid for Public Safety Personnel issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certified issuing agency.</p> </li></ol> <p>Desirable Qualifications</p> <ol> <li> <p>Experience working as a lifeguard.</p> </li><li> <p>Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientations, disabilities, and ethnic backgrounds.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to perform difficult record keeping involving considerable amount of judgment, speed and accuracy.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with students, faculty/staff, public and others.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to relate to a culturally, socially diversified student body.</p> </li><li> <p>Effective communication skills.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to perform under pressure, and analyze situations accurately and adapt effective courses of action.</p> </li><li> <p>Good problem-solving skills.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to interpret and implement applicable laws, regulations, policies, directives and procedures.</p> </li></ol> <p>Benefits</p> <ol> <li> <p>New employees hired on or after October 1, 2013 will contribute 2% of salary to the San Francisco Retiree Health Care Trust Fund (RHCTF).</p> </li><li> <p>Additional Days Off with Pay. As stipulated in the appropriate bargaining agreements and board resolutions, Classified employees working full year (260 days/year) work schedules are granted, as paid days off, the days between Christmas and New Year's Day, as well as an additional five (5) paid days off during spring break. Eligible school-term-only (STO) employees who are not scheduled to work the designated days between Christmas and New Year's Day shall be granted three (3) paid days off to be scheduled by mutual agreements between the employee and supervisor.
