<p>The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City's evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.</p> <p>DOC is seeking a committed summer intern to assist the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) in its critical operations. This intern will report directly to the Director of EEO and will play a vital role in supporting the integration of a new Case Management System. This position is essential for enhancing efficiency and ensuring a seamless transition during this process.</p> <p>The EEO Office is integral to upholding the values of integrity, professionalism, and accountability within the department. The intern will contribute to organizing and managing sensitive investigations pertaining to discrimination and harassment complaints, as well as providing support for reasonable accommodation requests and conflict resolution processes. This role will assist in reducing backlogs, streamlining case processing, and preparing for the successful implementation of the new Case Management System.</p> <p>The EEO Intern will gain practical, hands-on experience in workplace investigations and compliance operations within a public agency. They will observe the complete lifecycle of a case from intake through resolution, develop an understanding of the reasonable accommodation process, and enhance their skills in data management and quality control. This internship will also strengthen writing, organizational, and analytical abilities while providing insight into cross-functional collaboration among HR, Legal, and other units, ultimately offering a comprehensive view of public-sector operations and career paths in employment law and workplace compliance.</p> <p>Interns will be involved in a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:</p> <ul> <li>Assisting attorneys and investigators with organizing and maintaining files for active </li></ul> <p>complaints and backlog cases.</p> <ul> <li>Reviewing case materials for completeness and compiling necessary documentation </li></ul> <p>such as exhibits and timelines.</p> <ul> <li>Drafting closing memoranda summarizing allegations, investigative steps, evidence </li></ul> <p>analysis, and preparing findings for supervisory review.</p> <ul> <li>Assisting in drafting reasonable accommodation determination letters and ensuring </li></ul> <p>accurate documentation in compliance with policies.</p> <ul> <li>Supporting the tracking and updating of reasonable accommodation requests to </li></ul> <p>maintain organized and accurate records.</p> <ul> <li>Performing data entry and updates in the Tracking Management (TM) system, </li></ul> <p>assisting with data cleanup, and identifying discrepancies.</p> <ul> <li>Providing general administrative support, including maintaining trackers, scheduling, </li></ul> <p>document management, and contributing to special projects aimed at workflow improvement.</p> <p>Preferred Skills</p> <ul> <li>Current graduate students, preferably in law, public administration, human resources, </li></ul> <p>or a related field.</p> <ul> <li>Demonstrated interest in employment law, workplace compliance, or public service; </li></ul> <p>law students must have completed at least two semesters in an ABA-accredited program.</p> <ul> <li>Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple </li></ul> <p>tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.</p> <ul> <li>Excellent written and verbal communication skills, comfortable handling sensitive </li></ul> <p>and confidential information.</p> <ul> <li>Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required; familiarity with </li></ul> <p>data entry or case management systems is a plus.</p> <ul> <li>A proactive attitude, strong willingness to learn, and the ability to work both </li></ul> <p>independently and as part of a team.</p> <p>SUMMER GRADUATE INTERN - 10232</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <p>Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.</p> <p>Public Service Loan Forgiveness</p> <p>As a prospective employee of the City of New York, you may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs.
