<p>The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property and the Department works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes. Since its inception in 1865, FDNY has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest big city in the nation. This accomplishment requires a steadfast and daily commitment to maintaining the Department's core values.</p> <p>The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks a full-time Metal Work Mechanic in the Bureau of Fleet Services. Reporting directly to the Supervisor of Mechanics (ME), the successful candidate will:</p> <p>Under supervision, fabricates, assembles, and installs structural metal components for use in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, machinery, buildings, public structures and appurtenances; performs related work. Operates motor vehicles, including heavy trucks to transport equipment.</p> <p>From sketches and shop drawings, build parts and equipment using hydraulic shears, brake cut-off saw, drill press and band saw. Makes pieces ready for welding. Weld, bend and fabricate metals needed for fleet services vehicles and shop maintenance</p> <p>Make patterns and templates, cut, drill, forge, burn, weld, braze and use other metal work processes to fabricate. Use aforementioned methods and processes to attach fabricated components</p> <p>Preparation and finish work tasks, assembles and installs metal components. Perform specialized and structural welding, do rigging and required. Keep a neat and orderly workplace and free of obstructions and debris</p> <p>Maintain accurate records including Fleet Focus. Communicates with supervisors, co-workers and subordinates. Record notes verbally, written and or by email.</p> <p>Adhere to Department, Agency and Bureau rules, regulations and procedures. Observe City Time and Leave, code of conduct and fleet driving rules. vision zero policies and social media policies</p> <p>METAL WORK MECHANIC - 91225</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <ol> <li> <p>Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a journeyman/journeywoman metalwork mechanic, blacksmith or welder in fabricating, installing and metalworking plates, structural shapes or other metal components; or</p> </li><li> <p>At least three years of experience as described in ""1"" above, plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational schooling.</p> </li></ol> <p>License Requirements</p> <ol> <li> <p>A valid Welder's License issued by the New York City Department of Buildings and certified for Class I Shop and Field.</p> </li><li> <p>A Certificate of Fitness "Type G38" or "Type G95" Torch Use of O-2 Combustion Gas, issued by the New York City Fire Department.</p> </li><li> <p>A Class C Commercial Driver License with a Hazardous Materials endorsement and no restrictions that would preclude the performance of Metal Work Mechanic duties valid in the State of New York.</p> </li></ol> <p>Preferred Skills</p> <p>Fleet Focus Experience, works well with a team Possess basic hand tools.</p> <p>55a Program</p> <p>This position is also open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a Program. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
