<p>Job Description:</p> <p>A physical education teacher engages students in physical activity during their school day. Physical athletic activity is a main focus of P.E. classes, as well as educating students in exercise regimens, the history and societal impact of sports, nutrition and weight control programs, and advancing their interest in individual and team sports. Physical education teachers should be well grounded in classroom management and school procedures. In addition to helping students exercise, they may teach physiology, nutrition, or another related content area. With a renewed focus on improving core curriculum standards for English language arts and math, physical education teachers are expected to incorporate reading, writing, and arithmetic into their courses.</p> <p>Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li>Follows the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined and approved by the Highville Charter School Board of Education </li><li>Work with students individually when necessary to assess fitness and health progress, improve performance levels, and achieve overall physical education success </li><li>Prepare and give lectures and lead engaging group and one-on-one discussion sessions </li><li>Work with colleagues and department heads to coordinate curriculum goals </li><li>Grade students on participation, best effort, and knowledge of the curriculum </li><li>Physical education teachers should excel in motivating students to exercise and engage in athletic activities by sharing their own excitement for sports and exercise programs, while establishing procedures that promote student cooperation. </li><li>Sets and reinforces clear expectations and routines </li><li>Manages the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain an advantageous learning environment </li><li>Prepares lesson plans that achieve clear objectives, uses appropriate techniques, and serves the needs of all learners in the classroom </li><li>Demonstrates strong content knowledge </li><li>Maintains accurate and complete records as required </li><li>Conducts parent/teacher conferences </li><li>Assesses student learning on continual basis and identify areas of intervention if needed </li><li>Keeps parents up-to-date of student progress through use of interim reports, report cards, and/or conferences </li><li>Designs instruction to meet the needs of all students through both individual and small group settings as needed </li><li>Designs and implements assessments that measure progress and use assessments to refine curriculum and instructional practices </li><li>Designs clear and specific learning assessments </li><li>Maintains a positive learning environment that encourages open communication between the teacher and learner </li><li>Maintains a positive school community image that encourages ethical student behavior • Maintains ongoing communication with parents </li><li>Assists in the selection of textbooks, equipment and other education materials </li><li>Establishes and maintains professional relationships </li><li>Participates in professional learning by attending seminars and workshops to improve instructional practice and positively affect student achievement </li><li>Demonstrates knowledge of teaching methods, materials and educational practices for elementary school teaching Knowledge/Skills </li><li>Experience working with students in a diverse school setting </li><li>Experience with team teaching in a multicultural environment </li><li>Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing </li><li>Effective, active listening skills • Ability to work effectively with others </li><li>Organizational and problem-solving skills </li></ul> <p>Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Active Certification, with a teaching endorsement in physical education, as required by the Connecticut State Department of Education </li><li>Knowledge and skills required would generally be acquired with a Bachelor's Degree in Education or in a field appropriate. </li><li>Demonstrated and successful experience in a multi-cultural setting. </li><li>Demonstrated ability to teach elementary, middle and/or high school classes. </li><li>Human relations skills to work effectively with students, parents, school administrators and school staff. </li><li>Knowledge of teaching methods, materials and education practices applicable to elementary school teaching. </li><li>Ability to prepare and implement effective plans. </li><li>Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Executive Director/Principal or Highville Charter School Board of Education may see appropriate. </li></ul> <p>To be considered for this position, you must upload and send a cover letter, resume, Connecticut certification, transcripts, and 3 letters of recommendation to: hr@highvillecharter.com</p> <p>Highville Charter School is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer</p>
