Sherlock Center on Disabilities invites applications for an Assistive Technology Specialist. The individual in this position will provide technical assistance and support to the Sherlock Center's life span initiatives related to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities to access and use technology. This includes identifying statewide initiatives, supporting the development of a statewide approach to supporting technology initiatives, including training, and assistive technology (AT).</p> <p>Primary Purpose</p> <p>Provide technical assistance and support to the Sherlock Center's life span initiatives related to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities to access and use technology. This includes identifying statewide initiatives, supporting the development of a statewide approach to supporting technology initiatives, including training, and assistive technology (AT).</p> <p>Essential Duties</p> <ul> <li>Assess the collective needs of people with disabilities in Rhode Island and identify programs and support for them to access the assistive technology (AT) that can help them meet their goals. </li><li>Participate in the planning, organization, implementation, and evaluation of statewide learning opportunities for the disability community across all ages. </li><li>Research policies and practices that affect access to assistive technology, and advocate for access to assistive technology devices and services. </li><li>Work with other agencies to increase the capacity of public and private entities to provide assistive technology assistance. </li><li>Identify funding sources to support assistive technology use and training activities. </li><li>Develop accessible technical assistance and guidance resources and documents for use in implementing evidence-based practices. </li><li>Provide technical assistance to local service areas at the state, regional, and local levels for the purposes of: (1) assisting service areas in coming into compliance with federal regulations and state policy and (2) supporting the implementation of family-centered service systems that promote maximum developmental outcomes for children. </li><li>Provide training and technical assistance within the structures of state and local agency systems of personnel development, at statewide and regional conferences, and at designated training events. </li><li>Make presentations to public groups about assistive technology and related issues. </li><li>Perform outreach activities focused on difficult to reach and underserved populations. </li><li>Develop collaborative relationships with other agencies to facilitate cross-disability, consumer-responsive delivery of assistive technology services. </li><li>Document and compile technology use data, as needed, to support documentation in annual reports. </li><li>Compile and maintain, resource information on products, directions for use, maintenance and funding sources for such products/devices; computerize this information to facilitate updating. </li><li>Prepare information sheets and brochures in accessible formats, which make this information readily available to the public </li><li>Serve as local liaison to school districts, state agencies and organizations for Sherlock Center Assistive Technology Project activities. </li><li>Attend regular staff meetings and training opportunities. </li><li>Use the Independent Living Philosophy to guide and model all activities, communication, and developed materials. </li></ul> <p>Occasional Duties</p> <p>Other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director of the Sherlock Center.</p> <p>Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Essential knowledge and specialized subject knowledge required to perform the essential functions of the job. </li><li>Working knowledge of the principles, practices, and ethical standards of AT; relevant state and federal laws, rules and regulations; and applicable district policies and procedures. </li><li>Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, assistive technology (e.g., hardware, software, 3-D printing, smart home, safety, and security supports). </li><li>Ability to apply established technology solutions to enhance individual or small work group efficiency and effectiveness. </li><li>Responsible for orienting and training others. </li><li>Ability to effectively communicate with district personnel, schools, the community, and families. </li><li>Exceptional listening, verbal, and written communications skills. </li><li>Excellent customer service skills. </li><li>Great attention to detail and organizational skills. </li><li>Computer proficiency in Microsoft Suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as software applications relevant to area of responsibility. </li><li>Ability to work well independently and in a team setting. Ability to consult with individuals in the disability community including school, provider in developing and implementing effective interventions for individuals using AT. </li></ul> <p>Required Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Master's Degree in a major field of study or degree emphasis in Special Education or a Related Service. </li><li>Advanced training in Assistive Technology. </li><li>Experience with people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 5 year's of experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities with assistive technology. </li><li>Applicants who have experience supporting individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. </li><li>Applicants who are bi-lingual in Spanish and/or Portuguese. </li></ul> <p>Environmental Conditions</p> <p>The employee is not exposed to known adverse environmental conditions.</p>
