Position open until filled</p> <p>Job Title: Utility I</p> <p>Civil Service: No</p> <p>Department: Parks & Recreation</p> <p>Bargaining Unit: AFSCME</p> <p>Reports to Position: Parks Maintenance Manager</p> <p>Location: Thomas/Lowe Park</p> <p>Overtime Status: Hourly</p> <p>FLSA Status: Non Exempt</p> <p>JOB SUMMARY</p> <p>Under general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and moderately heavy manual work in the maintenance of City parks and parkways. Clean and maintain City facilities and perform related work as required. Ability to adjust work week schedule maybe required; weekend work maybe required.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/WORK PERFORMED</p> <p>List essential job functions that comprise the job; describe in terms of actions (verbs) and desired outcomes in order of most important first:</p> <ul> <li>Participates in the upkeep of public parks, sports facilities, roadways, buildings, grounds and other landscaped areas. </li><li>Cleans and maintains buildings and facilities, landscape areas, playground equipment, splashpads, picnic tables, benches and related amenities found in a park setting. </li><li>Empties refuse containers. </li><li>Cleans and stocks restroom products at each facility. </li><li>Performs inspections of park grounds and facilities; corrects and/or reports hazardous conditions. </li><li>Reports any facility problems and vandalism to his/her immediate supervisor. </li><li>Prepares sports fields for recreation programs and tournaments. </li><li>Fertilizes, aerates, weeds, prunes, mulches and cultivates landscaped areas. </li><li>Assists with special projects and events. </li><li>Operates vehicles, dump trucks, tractors, mowers, trimmers and other motorized and non-motorized equipment. </li><li>Performs manual labor functions as directed (e.g. raking; digging; lifting; painting; etc.) </li><li>Performs light maintenance on equipment and machinery. </li><li>Performs snow removal activities as required; includes shoveling, deicer applications and plowing. </li><li>Responds to weather related emergences as required. </li><li>May be required to assist in the training and provide oversight of subordinate employees and volunteers. </li></ul> <p>REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS</p> <p>List key dimensions (measurements for success) for this position:</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of effective methods of sports field preparation. </li><li>Knowledge of sports turf maintenance. </li><li>Knowledge of basic landscaping methods. </li><li>Knowledge of basic hand tools and equipment, their use and repair. </li><li>Knowledge of motorized equipment, their use and repair. </li><li>Ability to perform basic carpentry, plumbing and mechanical work. </li><li>Ability to perform janitorial skills for the maintenance of facilities. </li></ul> <p>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & PHYSICAL ABILITIES</p> <p>List key relationships (to whom and the nature of the relationship) and leadership received and from whom associated with this position:</p> <ul> <li>Ability to lift 75 pounds at one time and 50 pounds in repetition. </li><li>Ability to climb ladders and work at heights of 30 feet or more. </li><li>Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions for extended periods of time. </li><li>Ability to operate a variety of light motorized equipment. </li><li>Ability to traverse variable terrain conditions not accessible by vehicle including but not limited to, steep slopes, unlevel grades and heavily vegetated areas. </li><li>Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees. </li><li>Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and written. </li><li>Ability to understand oral and written instructions. </li></ul> <p>QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>List the minimum requirements to be considered for this position:</p> <ul> <li>High School Diploma or GED equivalent. </li><li>Must Possess a valid Iowa Driver's license. </li><li>Two (2) consecutive years of experience working in the park maintenance or equivalent field. </li></ul> <p>WORKING CONDITIONS</p> <p>List working conditions for this position:</p> <ul> <li>Work will primarily be performed in an outdoor setting. </li><li>Occasionally will be required to perform duties in adverse conditions (e.g. rain; snow; heat; humidity; dust; dirt; etc.) </li><li>May work a non-standard work week. </li><li>May be required to work overtime upon demand of workload. </li></ul> <p>REQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECKS</p> <p>List working conditions for this position:</p> <p>Sex Offender Registry</p> <p>Drug Screening</p> <p>Driving Record</p> <p>Pre-Employment Physical</p>
