<p>Job Title: System Administrator - Network</p> <p>Department: Iowa Valley Technology Services</p> <p>Reports To: Chief Information Officer</p> <p>Job Classification: Exempt</p> <p>Location: Marshalltown, IA</p> <p>Summary: The purpose of this position is to support and maintain the District's IT infrastructure, with a primary focus on secure, reliable connectivity and access to technology resources. Primary areas of responsibility include network (wired, wireless, access control), firewalls and other security appliances, telephony and communications systems, and network-related infrastructure services hosted on-premises and in the cloud. This position is responsible for the configuration, maintenance, security, and reliable operation of these systems, as well as the administration of cloud-hosted network and security services. This position monitors system performance and security, maintains a secure environment, troubleshoots issues, and works to quickly resolve problems, thus requiring 24/7 availability. This position also participates in the planning and implementation of on-premises and cloud-based systems to ensure that they meet the District's needs, are as secure as possible, follow industry best practices, and comply with all regulatory requirements.</p> <p>Job Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Administers the District's network, including switches, routers, controllers, gateways, wireless access points, network access control devices, and other related equipment. Manages security, patching, and upgrades of said equipment. Actively monitors the network and works to ensure optimal performance with a focus on security. Investigates and troubleshoots network issues, including network congestion. As necessary, makes configuration changes to the network and related systems and equipment. </li><li>Administers the District's Firewalls/Intrusion Deduction System(s) including the District's Web Application Firewall (WAF). Manages security, patching, and upgrades of said firewalls. Actively monitors the firewalls and works to ensure optimal performance with a focus on security. Regularly reviews and optimizes firewall rules and policies to ensure they are providing the highest level of security possible. Investigates and troubleshoots firewall issues. </li><li>Administers the District's telephony and communications systems, including the cloud-based phone solution and remaining on-premises voice infrastructure. Manages security, configuration, licensing, integrations, patching, and upgrades for these systems, monitors call quality and reliability, and investigates and troubleshoots call routing and connectivity issues in coordination with service providers and vendors. Configures and maintains E911 services, including registered and dispatchable locations, nomadic/automatic location detection based on network topology, and emergency routing and alerting to PSAPs and internal staff to ensure regulatory compliance and effective emergency response. </li><li>Administers network-related infrastructure services hosted on-premises and in the cloud, including DNS, DHCP/IP address management, and other supporting systems. Manages domain names and DNS records, monitors availability and performance of these services, and coordinates domain registrations and renewals to ensure continuous, secure operation. Collaborates with the IT team to integrate new services and applications, enforce naming and addressing standards, and implement security best practices (DNS filtering, DNSSEC, and related controls as appropriate). </li><li>Participates in the design, implementation, and administration of cloud-hosted network and security services with a focus on identity, device compliance, secure connectivity between cloud and campus networks and resources. Assists with the management of computer certificates and related public key infrastructure used for network access and other secured services, in coordination with the IT Team. </li><li>Maintains network and IT infrastructure documentation, including network configurations and diagrams, cable plant maps, and inventory of network devices and licenses. Collaborates with CIO and IT team to plan for network and firewall upgrades, expansion, and replacement. As needed provide user training as it relates to the network and The Districts security appliances. </li><li>Provides technical support as needed, especially as it relates to the network and connected systems, including but not limited to Esports, security cameras, door access control, audio/video, HVAC, and lighting controls. Assists with cable plant and IT infrastructure work, including supporting low-voltage installations, performing cable locates and verification, coordinating with contractors and facilities staff. Provides general IT and user support as needed, including participation in projects, troubleshooting issues, and assisting with technology use and access. Assists the IT department in developing, implementing, and maintaining a cyber/data security plan. Supports the overall success of the District by performing other duties as assigned. </li><li>Works and communicates professionally with others in a timely manner. Performs in a manner which benefits student learning. </li><li>Supports the overall success of the District by performing other duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Education and Experience: Completion of an Associate's degree and 5 years of IT experience required. Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in a technology related field preferred.</p> <p>Abilities: This position requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, technical aptitude, the ability to problem solve, and the ability to work in an environment of shifting priorities and frequent interruptions. Along with these general characteristics, the position requires knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and network hardware. This position must understand telecom and security-related systems and the associated protocols and standards. A network administrator must also be familiar with tools to document and diagram networks and related IT infrastructure. This position must be able to install, configure, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot the aforementioned IT infrastructure. An IT administrator in the higher education environment must be familiar with the unique infrastructure and system needs of higher education. Also, the position should have an understanding of the actual systems used by the District.
