<p>Position Title:</p> <p>Natural Resources Technician - Hourly</p> <p>Job Description:</p> <p>Restoration Ecology Assistant position will primarily support greenhouse management and operations with production of native plants for restoration projects within Salt Lake City Trails & Natural Lands properties. This position's duties will be a mix of greenhouse work, data collection, documentation, planting, monitoring and other responsibilities that advance our program's ecological goals and vision.</p> <p>JOB DUTIES:</p> <ul> <li>Assists with greenhouse tasks, including plant propagation, watering, organizing, cleaning, and pest control. </li><li>Tracks propagation success rates, seed production success, and overall plant production and use. </li><li>Monitors plants in the greenhouse, outdoor holding areas,?restoration?sites and other project areas and reports on project successes or needs. </li><li>Assists with native plant materials collection, including cuttings, rhizomes, and seeds. </li><li>Assists with managing, organizing, and ordering native seed inventory and propagation supplies. </li><li>Assists as needed with native seed farms, test plots, and project monitoring. </li><li>Assists with plant installation and directs other employees/volunteers on proper planting?techniques. </li><li>Interfaces with the public including providing support to interpretation programs, managing volunteer stewardship activities, and engaging with stakeholders in various formats. </li><li>Performs other duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Demonstrated knowledge and skills in plant, insect, mammal, or bird identification, restoration, farming, forestry, hydrology or ecology or a strong desire and aptitude to develop these skills </li><li>Practical outdoor work experience </li><li>Basic experience and knowledge of natural resource conservation practices and procedures </li><li>Demonstrated ability to operate hand tools and light equipment </li><li>Demonstrated ability to work in adverse conditions including rain, high or low temperatures, insects, and difficult terrain and to work full days outdoors without regular access to amenities </li><li>Demonstrated ability to carry a heavy pack and hike up to six miles in variable mountainous terrain </li><li>Must be 16 years of age or older </li></ul> <p>DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree in natural resources, natural sciences, i.e., biology, geology, hydrology, etc., forestry, wildlife management, environmental science or related fields </li><li>Six months of field experience, research experience, natural resources management or other directly relevant job experience </li><li>Experience in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and/or GIS and GPS and associated hardware </li><li>Effective at leading and motivating small groups </li><li>Excellent observation and communication skills (written and verbal) </li><li>Demonstrated knowledge of plant identification and invasive plant management </li><li>Detail-oriented and focused on accuracy and quality control </li><li>Possession of a valid drivers' license or driving privilege card </li></ul> <p>WORKING CONDITIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Work is primarily outdoors under a variety of weather and environmental conditions and may involve hiking to reach the job site. Work locations include Salt Lake City's foothills and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, the Jordan River Parkway, properties along City Creek, Red Butte Creek, Emigration Creek, Parleys Creek, and various city parks and greenways </li><li>Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull or lift medium to heavy weights. Difficult working positions; may have to stand, walk, or sit in uncomfortable positions for extended periods and squat or crawl. </li><li>Exposure to outside weather conditions year-round. </li></ul> <p>The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by persons assigned to this job.
