Discover your opportunities at Yale!</p> <p>Salary Range</p> <p>$100,400.00 - $163,100.00</p> <p>Overview Reporting to the Director of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Director of Public Programs is responsible for creating a broad vision and framework for public programs that will enhance the understanding and appreciation of the Museum's collections and exhibitions. The Director will build on and hone the current range of exhibition and educational programming offerings and forge the identity of the Museum's public programs through active collaboration with Museum and University colleagues, as well as partners from the community. The Director will contribute significantly to the Museum's role as a vital creative and intellectual force for its various constituencies, leading the strategic promotion of the Museum's public programs. The Director will be expected to participate in the larger professional community of museum public programming, and serve as a leader in the field. Supervisory responsibilities include all exhibition, educational, and visitor experience staff at the Peabody, as well as interns and students. Evening and weekend work will be required. Required Skills and Abilities 1. Flexible, energetic, creative, entrepreneurial leader, with strong consensus-building skills. Talented problem solver. Highly proficient at managing multiple priorities and a proven ability to build and maintain influence and trust with a wide array of constituencies, including staff, researchers, and colleagues, and to work collaboratively and independently. 2. Expertise in Python or demonstrated ability to translate experience from an equivalent language. Ability to translate institutional identity, ideas, direction, and themes into exhibitions and programmatic experiences across a wide range of topics, toward the Museum's long-range academic program and profile at the University. 3. Strong interest in and familiarity with museums; commitment to object-based research and teaching. Strong written, editing, and oral communication skills; ability to think analytically and quantitatively to formulate budgets. Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a range of individuals to adapt and exceed visitor expectations. 4. Demonstrated ability to represent the Museum through public speaking engagements. Ability to lead, manage, delegate, and juggle multiple tasks and meet demanding deadlines. Excellent organizational skills. 5. Proven ability to work well under pressure while exhibiting professionalism, a customer service attitude, and consistent flexibility in a busy multi-task environment. Demonstrated ability tracking and forecasting financial data and in writing successful grant applications. Preferred Education, Experience and Skills Proven experience in programming, with at least five years of experience in a museum and /or university environment. Knowledge of and interest in natural history.</p> <p>Principal Responsibilities</p> <ol> <li>Develops and directs the Museum's Public Programs. Conceptualizes and oversees implementation of creative, innovative, and intellectually stimulating educational programs and exhibitions that interpret and present the Museum's collections, exhibitions, and publications to University, local, national, and international audiences, including children, families, adult visitors, teachers, and students. Works closely with curators, collections staff, educators, Yale undergraduate and graduate students, and other Museum stakeholders to research and develop concepts and content. 2. Provides oversight and general vision with regard to the development, design, and production of exhibitions, including traveling exhibitions. Manages the work of the Assistant Director of Exhibitions, who works directly with content experts and curators of the exhibit, exhibition staff, Collections Managers, the Museum's Registrar, education staff, and other constituencies towards a strong and intellectually stimulating exhibition program at the Museum. Conducts research, in partnership with the Assistant Director on the relevant objects, themes, and ideas related to the Peabody's exhibition programming to ensure intellectual integrity and quality of the Museum's exhibitions, as needed. 3. Conceptualizes and oversees the educational agenda for the Museum, in partnership with the Student Programs area of the Museum, promoting the use of collections and exhibitions for teaching, and working constructively and collaboratively with the education department to plan, direct, and implement creative and innovative initiatives to further engage and spark curiosity with the Museum's visitors. Develops content and sound pedagogical frameworks for programming, encouraging active learning through the Peabody's collections. Collaborates with collections staff to develop a philosophical approach to teaching with objects and cross-disciplinary thinking. Improves and refines programs to appeal to diverse audiences by evaluating quality, attendance, and educational content. 4. Organizes and chairs committees as necessary to coordinate scheduling and implementation of programs and exhibitions across all Museum departments. Identifies, initiates, and fosters contact with individuals and/or community organizations interested in the Museum's public programs, and encourages their participation. 5. Works with University and community partners to conceive and implement cross-disciplinary content and programs to enliven discussion and expand interpretation of collections and exhibitions, enhancing the Museum's profile as a cultural and intellectual hub on campus and in the New Haven area. 6. Serves as an articulate and compelling advocate for the Peabody to prospective donors and collectors, the museum community, and potential collaborators. 7. Manages annual and program-specific budgets. Works with finance, development, and grants management staff to secure funding to support all programs, including grant writing. 8. Serves as a champion for sustainable solutions, systems, and practices, including modular systems, towards reducing waste through the Museum's exhibition practices. 9. Works with the Museum's editorial, marking/communications, and technology staff to ensure the development of digital resources for public education and exhibitions, including a strong web presence for program information. Plans strategically for documentation of programs and use of interactive media and the web to extend the impact of public programs beyond their initial instances. Works with marketing/communication to expand audience awareness and participation, and ensures that program publicity fully represents vision and purpose of programmatic offerings. 10. Performs other duties as assigned.
