<p>Job Description:</p> <p>Certified Bilingual Teacher (1 positions)</p> <p>Westbrook Middle /High School Grades 6-12 (1 position)</p> <p>Full Benefits per WEA Teachers' Contract</p> <p>Anticipated Start Date: August 25, 2025</p> <p>Location: Westbrook Middle School</p> <p>Qualifications: Bilingual Certified Teacher (009) required</p> <p>Must be fluent in English and Spanish (Portuguese is also highly desired)</p> <p>Responsibilities: Teaching multilingual learners effectively requires specialized approaches that honor students' linguistic backgrounds while supporting their academic growth. Job duties will include but not be limited to:</p> <p>Creating a Supportive Learning Environment</p> <ul> <li>Validate students' cultural and linguistic identities </li><li>Establish classroom routines that provide predictability, and promote English language acquisition </li></ul> <p>Developing Language Strategies</p> <ul> <li>Use visual supports (images, diagrams, graphic organizers) </li><li>Incorporate hands-on activities that connect language to concrete experiences </li><li>Teach academic vocabulary explicitly across content areas </li></ul> <p>Providing Instructional Differentiation</p> <ul> <li>Pre-teach key vocabulary before complex lessons </li><li>Modify text complexity while maintaining grade-level concepts </li><li>Use formative assessments that distinguish between content knowledge and language proficiency </li><li>Allow students to demonstrate understanding in multiple ways </li></ul> <p>Building on Prior Knowledge</p> <ul> <li>Connect new concepts to students' existing knowledge and experiences </li><li>Activate background knowledge before introducing new material </li><li>Acknowledge and incorporate diverse cultural perspectives </li></ul> <p>Collaborating Effectively</p> <ul> <li>Partner with MLL and non-MLL specialists to align instruction </li><li>Engage families as educational partners </li><li>Create opportunities for peer learning and interaction </li><li>Develop community partnerships that support multilingual students </li></ul> <p>Terms of Employment: Salary and benefits in accordance with the Agreement between the Westbrook Board of Education and the Westbrook Education Association.</p> <p>All applicants must complete an electronic application via Applitrack: www.westbrookctschools.org.
