Commensurate with Qualifications Position Location (City) Greenville Position Type Faculty (Teaching) Job Category Faculty (Teaching) Organizational Unit Overview</p> <p>ECU's Department of Physician Assistant Studies is a 27-month, master-level curriculum and is accredited by the ARC-PA. It is one of eight departments in the College of Allied Health Sciences (CAHS) and is in a state-of-the-art building on the health science campus in Greenville, NC, along with the College of Nursing and the Laupus Medical Library. The College of Allied Health Sciences is the first and largest college of allied health sciences in North Carolina and graduates the most allied health professionals for the state. The College has a strong working relationship with the ECU Brody School of Medicine, ECU College of Nursing, the East Carolina Heart Institute, ECU Department of Family Medicine, and the School of Dental Medicine. East Carolina University (27,000 students) is an integral part of ECU Health, the regional medical center that serves 29 counties.</p> <p>ECU is located in Greenville, NC, which is the cultural, educational, medical, and economic center of Eastern NC. The Greenville/Pitt County area has a population of approximately 175,000. Greenville is an ideal, family-oriented community that caters to outdoor and sports enthusiasts. Greenville is 45 miles from I-95 and just over an hour from the capital city of Raleigh. Coastal attractions such as Emerald Isle, the Outer Banks, and Wilmington are easily accessible for day trips. A few noteworthy features of the area follow:</p> <ul> <li>ECU's nationally recognized arts, theater, and music program offers entertainment opportunities for the entire family </li><li>Low cost of living, affordable housing, and excellent choice of schools </li><li>Desirable climate with relatively mild winters and four seasons </li><li>Division I AAC football, basketball, and baseball teams </li><li>Numerous shopping opportunities, including popular national chains and unique, locally-owned stores </li><li>20 parks, including 3 waterfront, a 324-acre nature park, and an outdoor amphitheater. </li></ul> <p>Job Duties</p> <p>The Principal Faculty-Medical Director is a member of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies faculty (rank commensurate with experience). This position is 1.0 FTE that is divided between 0.8 FTE as Principal Faculty and 0.2 FTE as Medical Director. The Medical Director supports the Program Director in ensuring that didactic instruction and/or supervised clinical practice experiences (SCPEs) meet current practice standards as they relate to the physician assistant (PA) role in providing patient care. The Medical Director is responsible for being actively involved in developing the mission statement for the program; providing teaching and instruction; evaluating student performance; designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating curriculum; and evaluating the program to ensure adherence to ARC-PA accreditation standards. The Medical Director is instrumental in assisting the program to ensure that students consistently meet the program's Student Learning Outcomes to achieve competencies required for PA practice.</p> <p>The Medical Director also participates in activities that promote the stature of the department throughout the institution.</p> <p>KEY JOB ELEMENTS: Medical Director Role</p> <ul> <li>Provides continuous, competent, and evidenced based medical guidance for the clinically related program components so that both didactic and supervised practicum instruction meet current acceptable standards. </li><li>Assists the program faculty with ongoing review of all Physician Assistant Program curriculum phases and continuous self-study. </li><li>Serves as an advocate for the program within the ECU Health and community systems to promote the PA profession and encourage increased utilization of PAs within the healthcare community. </li><li>Assists in clinical site development and clinical site monitoring as needed by the Clinical Education Team. </li><li>Participates in accreditation activities, as well as ongoing program evaluation, including review of the program's mission, vision, program goals, competencies, and outcomes. </li><li>Ensures annual review and achievement of the program's learning outcomes and competencies. </li><li>Assists with ongoing curriculum development (design and implementation), curriculum evaluation, and improvement. </li></ul> <p>KEY JOB ELEMENTS: Principal Faculty</p> <ul> <li>Provides teaching and instruction within the PA program using a variety of teaching methods, including lecture, case-based learning, simulation, and lab sessions in areas of clinical and/or professional expertise as per workload guidelines. </li><li>Evaluates student performance in assessment activities such as written clinical documentation, evidence-based medicine projects, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), and clinical and technical skills sessions/lab practical exams during all phases of the program. </li><li>Assists in curriculum development. </li><li>Assists the Directors of Didactic/Clinical Education in administrative coordination of these phases if needed. </li><li>Attends Student Progress Committee meetings, program retreats, new student orientation, white coat ceremonies, and further faculty/student community events as requested by the Program Director. </li><li>Assists in the recruitment (i.e., Search Committee member) and evaluation of clinical preceptors with the Program Director. </li><li>Participates in regular faculty meetings and Curriculum Committee meetings. </li><li>Represents the PA department and programs at the University and other organizational, academic, and social functions. </li><li>Participates in faculty development opportunities each year as required in the areas of teaching, service, and academic administration. </li><li>Provide remedial student instruction as needed. </li><li>Assists with other responsibilities as determined by the Program Director/Chair. </li><li>Performs other duties as assigned and outlined in the job description and in accordance with the provisions of the ECU Faculty Handbook. </li></ul> <p>Contingent upon available funding.</p> <p>Minimum Education/Experience</p> <ul> <li>A licensed physician assistant, a current or previously licensed physician, and maintain current required continuing medical education. </li><li>Completion of an ARC-PA-accredited program or its successors or predecessors, or completion of an LCME-accredited medical school. </li><li>Must have seven to ten years of clinical experience. </li></ul> <p>License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation</p> <p>NCCPA PA or MD license</p> <p>Currently or previously board-certified</p> <p>Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education</p> <ul> <li>Preferred applicants will have experience working in the Brody School of Medicine and/or ECU. </li><li>Has strong administrative experience and foundational medical knowledge. </li><li>Prefer a strong history of academic and clinical teaching. </li><li>Doctoral degree (MD/PHD or Clinical Doctorate) preferred. </li><li>Knowledgeable in current practice standards and the PA role. </li></ul> <p>Special Instructions to Applicant</p> <p>East Carolina University requires applicants to submit a candidate profile online in order to be considered for the position.
