<p>HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER I</p> <p>75020</p> <p>(Non-Competitive)</p> <p>DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS</p> <p>Highway Maintenance Workers I and II operate a variety of self-propelled and other equipment in the maintenance and repair of highway pavements, shoulders, roadsides and drainage, traffic signs and pavement markings, and in the control of snow and ice. In addition, they may be assigned a variety of maintenance tasks in support of the bridge and facility maintenance programs. This is manual work involving responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of various types of heavy motor equipment used for highway construction or maintenance, and the performance of recurring manual duties related to the operation of the equipment such as mounting and dismounting plows, wings and spreaders; and doing other preventive maintenance tasks or reporting appropriate repairs on the equipment. In addition to the equipment operation duties, you are also responsible for the routine maintenance of your vehicle and when not driving, do light-to-heavy physical labor. Work is normally under close supervision except for the more routine repetitive assignments. During the winter, everyone including trainees performs snow and ice control activities, such as operating a single-blade plow or the wing plow in a one-person plowing operation. Winter snow and ice control activities will involve a shift in your normal work hours. The incumbent will perform all related duties as required.</p> <p>TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES</p> <p>Operates heavy dump trucks with front plow, wing plow(s) and aggregate spreader to plow snow and control ice simultaneously.</p> <p>Operates snowplows with wing without assistance (OPP).</p> <p>Operates self-propelled sweepers to remove debris from the traveled way and from shoulders.</p> <p>Operates tractor-mounted mowers to control grass and weed growth within the highway right-of-way.</p> <p>Operates front-end loaders to load ice control sand and salt mixes, gravel or other materials onto trucks.</p> <p>Performs physical labor tasks as required.</p> <p>Washes or steam cleans trucks and other equipment.</p> <p>Assists in the upkeep of buildings and grounds.</p> <p>Performs radio dispatch tasks.</p> <p>Performs preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and assists mechanics in equipment maintenance and repair.</p> <p>Mounts, adjusts and dismounts snowplows, wing plows, and aggregate hoppers and spreaders. Responsible for written or computed daily work logs including route/location logs and material logs.</p> <p>Acts as an essential personnel and required to respond to emergency call-ins.</p> <p>Operates light trucks (less than Twenty-Six Thousand Gross Vehicle Weight Rating); tractor-mounted mowers; patch rollers (less than 9 tons); sewer cleaners; wood chipper; maintainers; forklifts and other similar equipment.</p> <p>Operates heavy trucks (more than Twenty-Six Thousand Gross Vehicle Weight Rating); Aerial lift trucks, snowplows, with wing (OPP); double wing OPP: catch basin vacuum trucks; self-propelled wideners; large pavement rollers (more than 9 tons); self-propelled street sweepers; front-end loaders; backhoes; over the rail mower windrow loaders and other similar equipment.</p> <p>FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS</p> <p>Good knowledge of the operation of dump trucks, flatbed trucks and various other types of heavy equipment and related attachments.</p> <p>Good knowledge of the geography of the area; Physical strength and agility sufficient to operate equipment over rough terrain, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.</p> <p>Ability and willingness to perform routine tasks requiring physical exertion such as lifting, climbing, painting, washing, sweeping/mopping, moving furniture, shoveling, raking, and mowing.</p> <p>Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written direction.</p> <p>Mechanical aptitude.</p> <p>Ability to identify, avoid, and report potentially hazardous working conditions.</p> <p>Ability to understand, interpret, and follow all applicable safety policies.</p> <p>Willingness to respond to emergencies and perform overtime work.</p> <p>Willingness to work outside under adverse weather conditions; Dependability.</p> <p>The employee's physical condition shall be commensurate with the demands of the position either with or without reasonable accommodations.</p> <p>Highway Maintenance Workers 1 are non-supervisory but may be called upon to provide on-the-job training and instruction to other workers.</p> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>Successful Completion of Traineeship requirements; or,</p> <p>Possession of a Class A or Class B Commercial driver license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle being operated.</p> <p>Eligibility for and continued possession of the license is required for employment.</p> <p>9/2022 Date of original composition</p>
